Hosa Technology Introduces Second-Generation Elite Series Microphone Cables
PSW Staff
04/16/12 08:12 AM,
Hosa Technology has introduced a significant upgrade of the company’s popular Elite Series microphone cables, which are now available with Neutrik XX-Series connectors plus a new nylon webbing over the cable’s PVC jacket. Available in both Lo-Z (XLR3F to XLR3M) and Hi-Z (XLR3F to 1/4-inch TS) configurations, the cables use 20 AWG Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) conductors that reduce resistance in order to facilitate maximum signal transfer. Polyethylene dielectrics reduce capacitance for enhanced high-frequency transmission, while conductive PVC reduces handling noise.…

Dual DiGiCo SD8 Consoles For Indy Pop Band Fun. Concert Tour
PSW Staff
04/13/12 05:39 PM,
NYC-based indie pop band Fun., on a sold-out cross-country tour and heeding the challenge of creating a compact touring audio footprint, has front of house engineer Daniel Hodges selecting a pair of DiGiCo SD8 consoles (plus an SD-Rack). Utilizing the streamlined Optocore network, as well as having the ability to share one stage rack between front of house and monitor world (managed by Justin Doucette), ultimately made the small trailer limitations workable. “The band has a pretty decent-sized lighting package…

Why Not Wye? When Combining Two Signals Into One Is Not A Good Idea
Dennis A. Bohn
04/13/12 01:34 PM,
This article is provided by Rane Corporation. Wye-connectors (or “Y”-connectors, if you prefer) should never have been created. Anything that can be hooked-up wrong, will be. You-know-who said that, and she was right. A wye-connector used to split a signal into two lines is being used properly; a wye-connector used to mix two signals into one is being abused and may even damage the equipment involved. Here is the rule: Outputs are low impedance and must only be connected…

Don’t Overlook These Aspects Of The House System/Tech Package
Mark E. P. (Milo) Woods
04/12/12 06:34 PM,
As we left off last time, our hero was fighting for truth, justice… Oops - wrong story. Our story here is to continue the discussion of creating a truly useful technical information package for a visiting acts and sound personnel, is a bit less glamorous. But it need not be overly complicated, either. Previously (here), we looked at the basic format of the tech package, and talked about the first five of 10 essential items it should offer. Now, let’s…

Church Sound: Preventing Hum And Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) In A System
Bruce Bartlett
04/11/12 02:43 PM,
This article is provided by Bartlett Microphones. You patch in a piece of audio equipment, and there it is: HUM! This annoying sound is a common occurrence in sound systems. Hum is an unwanted 60 Hz tone—50 Hz in Europe—maybe with harmonics. If the harmonics are especially strong, the hum becomes an edgy buzz. A sound system also might be plagued by RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). It’s heard as buzzing, clicks, radio programs, or “hash” in the audio signal.…
