Located in the heart of Chicago’s downtown, St. John Cantius is one of the city’s oldest Roman Catholic churches, with roots that date back to the influx of Polish immigrants in the 19th century. Recently the church replaced an aging, ineffective sound system dating back many decades, installing an Iconyx IC16-R digitally steerable array system from Renkus-Heinz. As Erik Saari of Wheaton, IL-based Sound Planning Associates explains, the Iconyx system brought much-needed improved intelligibility to the sanctuary. “Like many older… View this post

Pro Sound Alliance (Troy, New York) a division of Live Sound, Inc., recently provided a paging system to deliver both routine and safety-related information for the Yaphank Correction Facility (YCF) on Long Island, New York. The three-tiered redundant system is centered on the (figuratively) bulletproof Ashly Pema powered processor.  The new $133-million building will house 650 inmates in six “pods” when it is finally commissioned for operation in the spring of 2012. Beyond the pods, common areas, food preparation quarters,… View this post

Carefully conceived and implemented sound reinforcement systems at performing arts and theatre venues typically produce excellent results, in general, because they can be purpose-designed for the venue. The system’s electronic backbone can be “tricked out” to meet a wide range of applications, while the particular performance parameters of loudspeakers can be matched to coverage needs. Still, the loudspeakers need to be well-suited to present diverse source material as it is intended to be heard – slamming rock n’ roll to… View this post

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, located in Portland, Oregon, recently replaced their aging audio system with a fully automated system that includes Tannoy’s innovative QFlex array. When they did, they did they had two goals. One was to provide clear natural sounding reinforcement throughout the entire 1000-seat sanctuary and the other was to ensure the system was as user-friendly as possible. “Priest proof, I call it,” says Head Sexton, Kimberly Sherwood; “a very self-sufficient system.” Portland, Oregon based A/V systems integration contractor… View this post

Built in 1891, Baptist Temple in Philadelphia has been transformed into the Temple Performing Arts Center to serve as a principal performance venue for Temple University. The $30 million theatre overhaul included an installation of Meyer Sound M’elodie line arrays to support a busy calendar of university-sponsored events and bookings by area concert promoters. “The hall looks spectacular and has excellent acoustics,” says associate technical director and head sound engineer Peter Schall. “M’elodie completes the picture with its combination of… View this post

One of my favorite field tools is a basic analog impedance meter. It can be used to troubleshoot a host of sound system problems, either stand-alone or with some additional gadgets. The TOA ZM-104 has been around for many years and many experienced audio people have one. Mine has served me well and has the scars to prove it. It will be the example meter used in this article, although in principle the tests can be conducted using any similar… View this post

When Seth Powell, owner and engineer of SoundCheck Republic Recording Studio, enlisted the services of Dominick Campana, owner of Pro Sound Associates, to partner with him on the design of his newly relocated facility, Campana turned to Auralex Acoustics for the studio’s sound treatment needs.  A range of Auralex products were utilized, both in the construction phase as well as for post-construction wall treatments. To ensure maximum isolation, Auralex’s SheetBlok Sound Isolation Barrier, RC-8 Resilient Channel and U-Boat Floor Floaters… View this post
