Provided by Sweetwater. This is the first five in a series of ten points to remember when planing a church sound installation. Make sure to check out the second five points in the series. Q: I’m on a committee to purchase a new sound system for my church. Are there any special considerations that go into this type of installation?” A: In many ways, designing an effective system for a house of worship is one of the most…

Jeff Beck is currently touring in support of “Emotion & Commotion” - his first studio album in 7 years that debuted last month at number 11 on Billboard. Beck is one of the guitar gods, along with Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, to have played with the Yardbirds. He left to form The Jeff Beck Group in 1967, with Rod Stewart on vocals and Ronnie Wood on bass. Beck has gone on to earn five Grammy Awards for “Best Rock…

Provided by Sweetwater. Q: We’re starting to have some contemporary music at my church and I’m helping with the sound. For our sound system we’re using a regular stage setup with speakers on stands. Everything is working ok so far but I had a question about monitors. Is it true that placing smaller PA speakers behind the main speakers facing the worship team a better solution than using floor monitors? A: In the simplest terms, no. Properly placed floor…

Tech Tip Of The Day: Using Limiters For In-Ear Monitoring

Provided by Sweetwater. Q: We recently started using In-Ear Monitoring at my church, however, we’ve noticed that the volume is really hard to control. It’s all over the place, to the point where the volume is almost painfully loud at times! Can you offer any advice? A: The advantages of in-ear monitoring systems (IEM) are many, which you’ve undoubtedly already found. The most obvious advantage, of course, is the ability to reduce the high sound pressure levels (SPL) on…

Church Sound Files: The Many Advantages Of DI Boxes

Provided by HOW To Church Sound Workshops. DI Boxes (Direct Instrument or Direct Inject Boxes) are very helpful tools for your live sound system. The most common type is called a PASSIVE DI, which includes an isolation transformer and ground lift switch. The primary function of a DI Box is to convert the unbalanced (1/4-inch 2-conductor) phone plug output on your keyboard or guitar into a low-impedance (low-z), balanced (3-conductor) XLR jack, which can be plugged directly into your signal…

Editors Note: Updated with additional emergency assistance and charity information which is available below. Many pro audio folks have been hit very hard by the extreme flooding that submerged a sizeable portion of Nashville and Middle Tennessee in the wake of last weekend’s record rainfall. The Country Music Television (CMT) website provides an overview of the damage to performance and entertainment venues throughout the area. The latest reports indicate that the flood waters are receding, but what’s going to be…

Amplifier Power Master Class: Not All Ratings Are Similar

In designing a live sound system, you’ll come up with all sorts of questions, such as: One power amplifier is rated at 1,000 watts, and a different brand is also rated at 1,000 watts. Do they actually produce the same power? Suppose you add more loudspeakers in parallel to a power amp output. Does the amp produce more power, less power, or the same? Does each loudspeaker have to handle more or less power as you add more loudspeakers? To…

Sacred Sound: Getting Our Priorities Straight

Who is soundcheck for, anyway? Sounds like a silly question, at least until you start talking with the worship teams and tech crews at a lot of churches. Then the realization begins that in fact there are some different perspectives floating around out there. From my perspective as an audio engineer, soundcheck is not the process of setting up the microphones or making sure that everything is working properly, and it’s not a time for the worship team to rehearse…

This Designer Notebook was submitted by EAW. Live Sound/ProSoundWeb makes every effort to eliminate any use of marketing-inspired hyperbole. From the outset of the development process, the new KF740 line array module has been conceived as a medium-sized, flexible package capable of meeting the widest possible range of touring and installation applications, while providing exceptional sound quality as well as efficiency. Further, it needed to provide full-range performance as a stand-alone line array system as well as be easily integrated…

Tech Tip Of The Day: Feedback Problems With Drum Risers
PSW Staff

Provided by Sweetwater. Q: Our band recently built a drum riser to use on gigs. Now it seems like the drums feedback in the low end a lot more, especially the bass drum. What can we do? A: The drum riser is sympathetically vibrating (resonating) with the drums and/or PA system. Either way it is feeding these resonances back to the drums, causing the heads to ring a little more, which is being picked up by the mics, etc.…
