Mike Wireless: The RF Spectrum Before & After The “Big Day”
Mike Wireless

So the big day (June 12, formerly February 17, 2009) came and went, and now we have the results of “the change”. For those of you living under a rock for the past 10 years, what has happened is that full-power analog TV broadcasts have ceased in most US markets. At the same time, most of the of spectrum between 698 and 806 MHz, formerly used by TV broadcasts and wireless microphones, now has new owners and is not populated…

Mike Wireless: Recent Wireless Technology Series: Inside The Lectrosonics D4
Mike Wireless

The newest wireless system offering from Lectrosonics, the D4, is the first one I’m reviewing that does not use the UHF spectrum. Instead, the D4 runs in the license-free ISM band between 902 and 928 MHz. Unlike the UHF band, this slice of spectrum is only 26 MHz wide (as opposed to over 230 MHz for UHF). The FCC considers the ISM band to be license free, but still puts restrictions in place on how much power transmitters can have…

Audio Pundit: InfoComm 2009, Day 2: Digital Tide Keeps Rolling

Day 2 of InfoComm 2009 in Orlando proved just as interesting as day 1, starting with a big announcement from Yamaha, which will be handling the North American distribution of the Audinate Dante-MY16-AUD card, which was also just introduced at the show. Specifically, the MY16-AUD card is fully compatible with Yamaha digital MY16 card slots in consoles, processors and digital power amplifiers. Audinate’s Dante technology supplies high-performance digital media networking, and it is self-delivering for true “plug and play” digital…

Audio Pundit: InfoComm 2009, Day 1: Back To The Future
Keith Clark

The Expo portion of InfoComm 2009 at the Orlando Convention Center is underway, so let’s dive right into a very busy and interesting day one of the show. This morning I had the pleasure of sitting down with Rich Zwiebel. Ever heard of Rich? If not, let me take this opportunity to note that Mr. Zwiebel has made a profound difference in the lives of many audio professionals for more than 20 years with trailblazing technologies such as MediaMatrix and…

Audio Pundit: Past & Present: Were The “Good Old Days” Really All That?

A recent poll here at ProSoundWeb asked, “The one thing I’d like to see the return of, or at least more of, in sound reinforcement is…” Response choices included tube electronics, rotary faders, loud/distorted audio, wired-only microphones, and wedges only (no IEM). Oh, and the winner: none of the above, which garnered almost 50 percent of the vote. Number two was tube electronics getting more than 20 percent, with number three being wired-only mics at about 15 percent. I was…

Mike Wireless: Recent Wireless Technology Series: Inside The MIPRO ACT Digital

The MIPRO ACT Digital wireless system has been on the market for a couple of years, and like the AKG DMS 700 digital wireless system, it uses the same UHF bandwidth we’re all familiar with when using any UHF-band microphones. (Note that the “D” in “Digital” for this MIPRO system is capitalized because it is part of the official product name, rather than the generic system name.) Specifically, the MIPRO ACT Digital covers 620–692 MHz – fairly close to the…

Mike Wireless: Recent Wireless Technology Series: Inside The AKG DMS 700

A number of manufacturers have introduced new wireless microphone systems in the past two years – many of them in response to the changes in the RF spectrum brought about by the FCC. As a result, I thought it would be interesting to provide an in-depth look at a number of these recently introduced systems, beginning here with the AKG DMS 700 digital wireless system, which was announced at NAMM in January of this year. Professional caliber digital wireless systems…

Lizard's Lounge: A Trip Most Worthwhile: Community, Technology & Education At LAB DemoFest 2009

I have a keen interest in the history of live sound reinforcement, the gear that was used way back when, and the associated advancements of technology. I’m also very interested in new technology, even if the price tag of the cutting-edge stuff means the chances of me using it any time soon are a pipe dream. And, I also like to just hang out and talk shop with other sound guys. A recent event planned by some ProSoundWeb community members,…

Mike Wireless: Darkness Before The Dawn? Is The UHF Spectrum Going To Ease Up After June 12?
Mike Wireless

One of the more common phone calls I’ve been receiving lately is from people looking for advice on which frequency bands to choose for their new wireless systems. Maybe it’s all of the tours going out, or maybe people are finally getting the message about the spectrum changes and they want to “do the right thing”. I’ve certainly noticed that quite a few systems proliferating the market in the last 10 years fall within the “700 MHz band” (between 698-806…

Audio Pundit: Did You Know There’s A Digital LCD Specifically For Car Washes?
Keith Clark

In my role as editor of PSW, I get a lot of press releases sent my way whether I want them or not. Most of the time, at least, I enjoy receiving them - even the ones that don’t necessarily apply to audio/sound in any way, shape, or form are often interesting. (One of the “benefits” of being a certifiable information junkie, I guess…) Case in point is the release below that I received earlier today. Again, certainly not audio…
