Classic Sanctuary Gets A Modern Sound With Iconyx

St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church recently updated their 1960s-vintage sanctuary with a new Iconyx system, meeting the needs of both traditional and contemporary worship. As Dr. Bob Griffin of Baltimore-based Design and Integration observes, it was also an important consideration in designing the church’s new sound system. “Speech intelligibility and focused coverage are always high priorities, particularly in a very reverberant space such as this one,” he says. “But it was also important to create a system with a…

Turbosound Aspect Helps Southern U Stadium Recover from Hurricane Gustav

After Hurricane Gustav hit Baton Rouge in September of 2008, the city was shut down for several days due to damage. At Southern University and A&M College, damage to 29,500-seat A.W. Mumford Stadium was significant but manageable. “It seems like a pretty minor issue but the truth is, losing the revenue generated by a home football game is significant,” notes Henry L. Thurman III, Director of the Physical Plant for Southern. “We had lost the entire sound system from our…

Austin’s yellow DOG Studios, home to independent producer and engineer David Percefull, recently outfitted Studio 1 with a 32-channel API 1608 console, including API 500-Series modules. When purchased, Studio 1 came with no console at all, just outboard gear stitched together to work with virtual mixes. Among the studio’s plethora of mic preamps were twelve channels of API 3124s. “I’ve worked on a lot of large-format consoles, but I had very little experience with API,” said Percefull. “When we decided…

Pathways Church Chooses Danley Loudspeakers In Upgrade Of Historic Facility

Pathways Church in Denver, Colorado is unique in many ways though surrounded by classic architecture, the church delivers a decidedly contemporary service, complete with a fully-voiced rock band. Like many houses of worship, the sound system in Pathwas Church was inadequate to amplifying the worship music. Coverage was spotty, output was weak, and intelligibility was fleeting, especially with the system frequently red-lined. On a tight budget, Colorado-based Summit Integrated Systems replaced the existing loudspeakers with Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers while…

Church Sound Basics: “1,000 Watts” Isn’t Necessarily 1,000 Watts By Some Standards
Jon Baumgartner
03/09/10 03:42 PM,
At some point in the past, certain power amplifier manufacturers got hip to the fact that the only specification most power amp buyers pay attention to is wattage. Sadly, they decided that misleading specs were OK as long as it created better sales. Hmm…. For purposes of our discussion, let’s consider two amplifiers. Amplifier A is rated at 1,000 watts (per side), into a 2-ohm load, with .1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), measured at 1 kHz, while Amplifier B…
