This article is provided by Church Audio Video. One of the most common questions heard from churches is whether they should purchase powered speakers and subs, or use passive (unpowered) speakers with amplifiers. This is, of course, entirely dependent on the situation. Just a few of the questions we ask in return are: “Will the system be portable or installed?” “Will the connections on the installed speakers be easily accessible?” “Will the people using the portable system be able…

A Guest Post from Jonathan Malm on the Church Soundguy blog. Some time ago I wrote this as an introduction for my Church’s audio team. I’ll be the very first to admit it’s basic introduction, but these basics are essential to our understanding of mixing. I’m sharing this checklist of sorts with you because it’s proven particularly helpful to volunteer sound guys or sound guys at smaller churches, and I’m hopeful it will be helpful to you as well.…

This article is provided by ChurchTechArts. For our Good Friday/Easter stage set up, we really change things up from our normal set up. Instead of the band being clustered in the middle of the stage, we opened them way up, and spread them out on varied height platforms all across the stage. We did this because a key point of our Good Friday service centers around a very powerful dance during Lead Me To The Cross. It’s a good…

This article is provided by Behind The Mixer. Imagine yourself walking up to a microphone to give a speech. Now imagine, in front of you, are about 10,000 people eagerly awaiting your every word. This is how the movie “The King’s Speech” opens. Only you have to add one other factor. The person speaking, the Duke of York, speaks with a debilitating stutter. When a guest speaker comes to your church, chances are they feel nervous. Using methods like…

Allen & Heath has announced that Mercury AV Ltd recently supplied an Allen & Heath iLive-T digital mixing system to manage FOH and monitor sound at Cambridge Community Church. Acoustics is arguably the single most important consideration for new and existing houses of worship. In order to effectively communicate the message through spoken word or music, a good acoustical environment is critical. Poor speech intelligibility or inadequate music reproduction can make it difficult for members of your congregation to receive and understand the message as it was intended to be heard. Acoustics is a comfort factor. The acoustics of your space should be as important as, or even more…

Provided by Sennheiser. Today, our discussion focuses on the processing and optimization of miked sources on the worship stage, using the equalization available in the PA console channel strips or outboard equalization inserted into these channels. It does not discuss overall system processing or “tuning” and assumes appropriate system installation and optimization. So, have you ever experienced a case of microphones squealing feedback before they are loud enough in your PA mix? Even with great mics and a wise…

This article is provided by ChurchTechArts. I hate recruiting. I’m really not good at it, and I’ve always found it difficult. But, as TDs, it’s something we need to be doing. Somehow, we need to be finding ways to expose people to our ministry and offer them a chance to get involved. Like most TDs, I’ve tried bulletin announcements, personal recommendations, walk-in slides and ads on the church website. Most efforts don’t go so well. I have been convinced…
