This article is provided by Church Audio Video. Acoustical treatment is something that most studio engineers are quite familiar with. However, many church audio technicians have only a passing understanding of the subject. So, rather than telling you what treatment you need for your space, here’s a primer on different types of acoustical treatment. Acoustical treatment is the method by which we control reflections in a space to create the ideal acoustical profile, thereby enhancing audio perception. A reflection…

Palm Valley Church in Mission, Texas recently hired Mankin Media Systems (MMS) of Franklin, Tennessee to design/build a new facility to house their growing congregation. The existing 600-seat auditorium previously thought to be large enough was now bursting at the seams so a new 2,500-seat auditorium was erected. MMS worked with architects that were not familiar with the type of facility the church wanted, and also worked closely with local engineers and contractors to ensure the building was built to…

At the heart of what we call “effects” in professional audio is the delaying of sound. Virtually any audio effect - reverb, flanging, chorusing, phaser, echoing, looping, etc. - uses (and manipulates) delay in one form or another. You’ve probably heard the repetition of a person’s words in a large canyon. The first sound is the voice arriving directly to our ears, and then moments later, the voice repeats after the sound wave has traveled across the canyon and back…

This article is provided by Behind The Mixer. How do you decide upon a stage setup? That’s the question recently posed to me by a reader. It’s a simple question that leads to a simple, yet lengthy response. Setting up a stage is more than just placing gear and placing people, it’s all about… ...consistency. The email included this statement: “Most of the time we just show up to church and spend a lot of time just trying to…

Besides sound quality, there really isn’t much to think about when it comes to microphones, right? Well, guess again! Like all elements of a sound system, microphones present their own unique set of special problems. Fortunately, a lot of these problems are relatively simple to solve. It’s just a matter of identification and appropriate action. For example, most mic handles include a set-screw near the connector, with many models using this screw to ground the mic handle. If the handle…

This article is provided by ChurchTechArts. Maybe this never happens at your church, but at ours, we regularly have people on stage being interviewed. Sometimes they are telling their story, sometimes they are talking about or announcing a new ministry, other times they are reporting on an event or outreach we had. The one thing all these people have in common is that they are not used to being in front of people, nor do they really know how…

From a technical standpoint, the useful life expectancy of the mixing console you purchase this week is six to ten years at best. Its growing repair costs coupled with improvements in console design will warrant purchasing a replacement unit within that time frame. It’s also likely that your need for inputs and outputs will have grown beyond the capacity of that console, so it will be time for a change anyway. There are over 40 manufacturers of consoles. Finding the…

This article is provided by Church Audio Video. Scenario: You’re the Worship Pastor of a large, rapidly growing contemporary church. Your church has outgrown your current worship facilities and the board has chosen to move to a larger, pre-existing building. This new worship space was not designed with acoustics in mind. This building has all the acoustical charm of a large metal box. Question: Is it possible to achieve “good acoustics” without spending a fortune on renovations and equipment?…
