The SpectraPulse wireless microphone system from Audio-Technica is one of the more interesting products to enter the market. It was announced about two years ago and appears aimed mostly at installed sound applications, specifically boardrooms and courtrooms where operating range is not so much the issue, but data security and ease of use are important. The system represents a fresh approach in its form factor, technology and performance, when compared to “traditional” wireless microphone systems. It is my understanding that…

The Northbrook Theater in Northbrook, IL, has selected AKG DMS 700 digital wireless microphone systems to play a role in all 12 of its annual productions. The 300-seat theater recently upgraded to the DMS 700 systems, incorporating 12 DSR 700 receivers, 10 CK 77 Microphones, and 25 DPT 700 bodypacks. The theater is using AKG’s digital wireless system to drive a series of performances put on by youth, for youth. Performing Arts Supervisor Kurt Ottinger needed a system that came…

The MIPRO ACT Digital wireless system has been on the market for a couple of years, and like the AKG DMS 700 digital wireless system, it uses the same UHF bandwidth we’re all familiar with when using any UHF-band microphones. (Note that the “D” in “Digital” for this MIPRO system is capitalized because it is part of the official product name, rather than the generic system name.) Specifically, the MIPRO ACT Digital covers 620–692 MHz – fairly close to the…

A number of manufacturers have introduced new wireless microphone systems in the past two years – many of them in response to the changes in the RF spectrum brought about by the FCC. As a result, I thought it would be interesting to provide an in-depth look at a number of these recently introduced systems, beginning here with the AKG DMS 700 digital wireless system, which was announced at NAMM in January of this year. Professional caliber digital wireless systems…

Sabine is now shipping SWM6000 Smart Spectrum wireless microphone systems that operate in the 915 MHz ISM band, which is license-free and available for use in North and South America. Because the 902 to 928 MHz ISM band is outside the range of frequencies that have been allocated for consumer wireless products and broadcast digital television (DTV), wireless users will be able to use all available channels in the band without interference from DTV or other UHF devices. SWM6000 Smart…

The new administrative complex at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in California, one of the largest tribal gaming facilities in the nation, incorporates a wide range of A/V technology to facilitate productive meetings, including Sennheiser wired and wireless microphones. Neil Shaw of Menlo Scientific Acoustics, Inc., of Topanga, California, designed the A/V system, and Daryl Ballou of Muzak Systems Division, in Fort Mill, South Carolina, installed it. Each of the twelve individuals at the dais has a microphone and…

One of the more common phone calls I’ve been receiving lately is from people looking for advice on which frequency bands to choose for their new wireless systems. Maybe it’s all of the tours going out, or maybe people are finally getting the message about the spectrum changes and they want to “do the right thing”. I’ve certainly noticed that quite a few systems proliferating the market in the last 10 years fall within the “700 MHz band” (between 698-806…

With more degree programs and specializations than any other art and design university in the U.S., the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) encompasses a dedicated program for sound design students that includes opportunities to work with dialog, sound effects, and foley in a setting that incorporates many of the latest technological advancements. Production of student films approaches 40 projects in a single quarter, so the school’s equipment receives heavy use. Peter Damski, CAS, is Professor of Sound Design…

ABC Television’s “Dancing with the Stars” program continues to be a ratings juggernaut, pulling in 22.5 million viewers for the premier episode of the reality show’s eighth season in March, and also this season, the show has made a number of refinements to its complement of Sennheiser equipment, with production mixer Evan Adelman adding 11 MKH 8000 Series condensers for coverage of the 18-piece orchestra. Further, two of the new Sennheiser crystallized SKM 5200 RF handheld microphones have also been…
