For a live broadcast like the ACMAs, there are literally hundreds of wireless frequencies in use. Wireless systems were supplied by ATK Audiotek, while system design and frequency coordination were handled by Dave…

As in years past, Harman Professional audio components played a crucial role in the live sound reinforcement system at the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards, held February 12 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. ATK Audiotek provided live sound reinforcement at the venue, relying on JBL VERTEC line arrays and AKG microphones. The annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, known as Music’s Biggest Night, is presented by The Recording Academy to honor outstanding achievements in the production and performance of recorded music.…

For the loyal fans of Adele, the time has come for the pop chanteuse’s name to be added to a pantheon of British soul divas like Amy Winehouse, Sade, Annie Lennox, and Dusty Springfield. Currently crisscrossing North America in support of her sophomore album 21, Adele Laurie Blue Adkins indeed deserves such a distinction, based upon the sheer power of her own voice and honors such as two 2009 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal…

Noise is rarely a positive any audio set-up. And just to complicate things, wireless systems are susceptible to some types of noise that are rarely encountered with other types of audio gear. Here are some practical tips on recognizing and dealing with pesky wireless noise problems. Weak Signal A low RF (radio frequency) signal level is almost certain to increase background noise. The first sign is a low-level “hissing” sound that may come and go. As the receiver input drops…

When I first started my work in the church, wireless was only found in the “big” churches and was often fraught with problems like drop out and interference. The church I attended in my youth still used a large “around the neck” dynamic mic. It was an EV 649a and it measured almost 3/4” around and approximately 4” long. The mic was so heavy it needed a neck coil (think necklace) to hold the mic in place. I remember on…

It’s not been widely reported, but the FCC could be preparing to finally authorize “white spaces” equipment in the U.S. by the end of this month. A long-time friend and colleague who tracks these issues closely notes that, “details are still mostly unknown, but some reports are that only two TV channels per TV market are being set aside for wireless mics. Plus, one report says that they won’t even be ‘clean’ channels, they will be shared with other services.”…
