A Memorandum Opinion and Order issued today by the FCC reserves two TV channels nationwide for wireless microphone use. The reserved channels are off-limits to UHF Band Devices that operate in the white spaces between assigned TV stations, thus preventing them from interfering with wireless microphone signals on those channels. Large-scale users would be able to achieve extended protection for specific events through the geo-location database prescribed by the FCC in 2008. Shure Incorporated and a number of Congressional legislators…

It’s not been widely reported, but the FCC could be preparing to finally authorize “white spaces” equipment in the U.S. by the end of this month. A long-time friend and colleague who tracks these issues closely notes that, “details are still mostly unknown, but some reports are that only two TV channels per TV market are being set aside for wireless mics. Plus, one report says that they won’t even be ‘clean’ channels, they will be shared with other services.”…

The FCC finally dropped the other proverbial shoe during the 2010 Winter NAMM show when it issued an Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking prohibiting sales of wireless microphone and monitoring systems that operate in the 700 MHz frequency band, and kicking existing ones out by June 12 of this year. This final step in the DTV transition clears the way for the 4G consumer and emergency wireless services that roll out this year. Verizon, which paid $9.3 billion…

Shure Incorporated President and CEO Sandy LaMantia today expressed the Shure’s strong support for legislation recently introduced by Representative Bobby Rush (D-IL) that proposes to protect 13 different classes of wireless microphone users from interference that could result from the operation of new devices that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved for frequencies (known as the “white spaces”) currently occupied by wireless microphone users. “Shure thanks and applauds Congressman Rush for his very thoughtful and balanced approach to the…

Many of us have heard about White Space Devices (WSDs) and that they have been named TV Band Devices (TVBDs) - maybe because “WSD” sounds a little too close to “WMD”. And perhaps some of us are aware that according to the FCC, these devices will co-exist with our TV broadcasts AND our wireless microphones in the UHF band between about 500 and 698 MHz. So of course the concern is that these devices might interfere with our wireless mics,…

As most of us should know by now, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has made its initial recommendations of the use of wireless microphone and communications systems alongside that of TV Band Devices and other spectrum users. The original proposed date of February 18, 2009, still has some implications, albeit put back to June 12, 2009, if and when that decision makes its way from the Senate through the House of Representatives. In the meantime, parts of the U.S. have…

I was doing some quick web surfing yesterday when I ran across this article in the Washington Examiner. I’m reading the first two paragraphs, thinking “politics as usual, blah, blah…” But the third paragraph got my attention: “By pushing to delay the long-scheduled transition of television broadcasting from analog signals to digital signals, president-elect (now president, kc) Obama is directly aiding Sprint and its partner Clearwire while hurting Verizon.” Again, to be clear, I’m not referring to alleged political alliances…

In November, the Federal Communications Commission released the full text of its Second Report and Order approving the use of the “white spaces” – the TV channels that are not actually occupied by a broadcast station – by unlicensed consumer wireless devices. The FCC now refers to these as “TV Band Devices” or “TVBD’s”. The 130-page document provides details of the technical, operational, and regulatory requirements that the new devices will be subject to. The FCC’s attention to the needs…

Shure has delivered a new, alternative White Spaces Proposal to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding Docket 04‐186. In a company communication issued late yesterday (October 16, 2008), the company stated, “The time is now for anyone interested in the future of quality professional wireless audio to communicate to all of the FCC Commissioners that the Shure proposal is the minimum acceptable proposal to continue their operations without serious disruption. “The FCC Test Report has been released and a vote…

In a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, NSCA Executive Director Chuck Wilson expressed concern regarding white spaces proceedings and new television bandwidth devices. As recently as August 9, the FCC conducted a test of white spaces devices before and during a Buffalo Bills-Washington Redskins game in Washington D.C. The results showed that the prototypes did not accurately sense wireless microphone signals, a function that would be required to prevent interference. “Our members are alarmed by preliminary public reports about…
