The Großer Musikvereinssaal, known to many as the Golden Hall, is home to Vienna’s Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra’s famed annual New Year’s Day Concert. With a worldwide television audience tuning in every New Year’s Day since 1959, the world-renowned architectural acoustics needed more; they needed a full sound system complete with AKG C 12 VRs, K 702s and WMS 400 wireless system. The Golden Hall is more than just a concert venue; it also hosts numerous lectures and public…

We get to clean amplifier filters on a daily basis, put wedges into garbage bags to keep them dry, mix with visqueen draped over the console (also to keep it dry). And, we’ll have a shop vacuum at front of house as well as the monitor “beach.” That said, the toughest aspect to deal with when doing shows in the…

The Marshall Electronics MXL professional microphone line has evolved with the introduction of the V89, a fully pro condenser microphone whose performance belies its $599 MSRP (U.S.). The V89 is proof positive; a perfect example of the way Marshall has “dialed in” quality control of their own overseas manufacturer to produce an instrument worthy to be called “professional.” The V89 starts with a custom body design made of brass that minimizes body resonance while the chromed tuned grill cavity helps…

There are several types of audio software plug-ins (or “plugs”), third-party software developed to enhance the functionality of software-based digital audio workstations (DAW). Most plug-ins use host-based or “native” processing. These include Steinberg’s VST (which runs on many platforms), Digidesign’s own RTAS (Pro Tools LE) and Apples’ AU (Logic). We’re interested in TDM (Time Domain Multiplex), a format used by Pro Tools HD that employs DSP cards, reduces latency and is used by Digidesign Venue live sound consoles. Venue input…
