A Guest Post from Jonathan Malm on the Church Soundguy blog. Some time ago I wrote this as an introduction for my Church’s audio team. I’ll be the very first to admit it’s basic introduction, but these basics are essential to our understanding of mixing. I’m sharing this checklist of sorts with you because it’s proven particularly helpful to volunteer sound guys or sound guys at smaller churches, and I’m hopeful it will be helpful to you as well.…

This article is provided by Behind The Mixer. Guest Post from Duke DeJong I recently have been a part of some discussions regarding the worship mix of various churches and the question frequently comes down to who should have control over what the mix sounds like and how much influence various other people should have. For me this is fairly simple and I thought it was worth some discussion here. I think the first place to start in this…

A Guest Post from Duke DeJong on the Church Soundguy blog. The life of a church tech is crazy. You’re the first to arrive and last to leave, get few days off and for less money than your secular counterparts. Despite that, I believe tech ministry is one of the most amazing ministries you can serve in. I’ve recently been asked for advice on starting a career as a church tech. Those who’ve asked have had varying skills, personalities,…

Sound quality can be drastically improved by incorporating one thing: compromise. No, it’s not a dirty word. Without it marriages fall apart, friendships fade, churches split and wars are waged. Of course some things are not open to compromise, but in most cases we can’t live without it. One of the biggest challenges to getting quality sound in a church is getting the sound department and music staff to compromise. Some sound people are unwilling to change and feel they…

When working with sound at church, we all know just how many things can go wrong. The kicker is usually when they go wrong, which invariably seems to be at the worst possible moment. The church I belong to, like most, doesn’t have a great sound system. We sure would like to have one, but like many, we’ve chosen to “make do” over the years. One day, I asked the senior pastor what his primary goal would be if we…

This article is provided by Behind The Mixer. The future of church audio is not all pretty flowers and sunshine. A student recently asked me my thoughts on the subject and the more I dwelt on the topic, the more I saw that the future is not pretty. Here is my view, why the church is destined for that direction, and what you and I can do to change all that. I want to start by traveling back in…

This article is provided by Behind The Mixer. Some time ago I read an article which detailed worship team job descriptions, including the position of “sound technician.” The job description for sound tech was a little bit lacking in my option, so I wanted to see if we could fix it up a bit… First off, I applaud the author for creating the job descriptions. Whenever a person wants to join a worship team, they need to know the…

This article is provided by Behind The Mixer. “If you build it, they will come.” That’s great for drawing in baseball fans but not so good for recruiting volunteers. Just because you have a sound booth everyone can see doesn’t mean volunteers are going to run up and ask to join the team. Let’s say a man named Joe thinks he’d like to work on the a/v team. Why wouldn’t he ask to join? Try these totally acceptable reasons;…

This article is provided by ChurchTechArts. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine wrote a wonderful article giving advice to young TDs. It’s a great read and I concur with everything he says. In large part inspired by his article, I wanted to step back and offer some advice to those folks who are thinking of a career as a TD. There’s an oft-repeated story in the TD world here in SoCal. Someone was considering taking a TD…

This article is provided by ChurchTechArts. Many years ago I wrote an article on ChurchTechArts on which the following question was posed. I seem to get asked this question a lot and it’s a great way to lead into this article: “How do you keep your volunteers sticking around? We are a large church approx 3000 members running 5 services and everything is volunteer run.” “The engineer that runs the services that weekend is there for about 20 hours…
