One of the topics that I’ve seen poorly understood, and even deliberately used to mislead people, is the issue of wireless microphone transmitter power and the effects said power has on system performance. Let’s start with the basics: all things being equal, more transmitter power = more range for the system, but not in a linear way. In broad terms, when discussing analog wireless systems, the receiver wants to see a signal from a transmitter that is at least about…

Two interesting developments have emerged recently under the heading of “white spaces”. First, if you recall, the FCC authorized the development and eventual marketing of “white space devices” that have now come to be known as TVBDs (TV Band Devices). However, the technical requirements for these devices are quite stringent; specifically, that they must sense other signals and take a lower priority in any given location than existing TV broadcasts and wireless microphones. Microsoft, working with researchers at Harvard University,…

The recent sixth-annual Univision “Premios Juventud” awards show utilized Sennheiser’s wireless technology to recognize the U.S. Hispanic youths’ top recording artists, movie stars, sports figures and pop culture icons. Over 80 wireless channels were used for the podium mics and most of the monitoring. Stylized performances from long-time favorites and up-and-coming celebrities punctuated the announcements, with reggaeton star Alexis y Fido performing with a pair of chrome-customized Sennheiser SKM 5200 wireless mics. “Whereas most awards shows feature performances that include…

The professional audio spec was put together by Brussels-based TV Connections Image & Sound, using 150 QSC loudspeakers and over 4 km of cable, with the QSC Audio BASIS platform meeting the control, zone splitting, monitoring and processing needs of amplification and loudspeaker systems over an Ethernet network. When planning the upgrade from analog to digital for its Studio 12 in Montreal, CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada’s national public broadcasters, found that a 48-channel Solid State Logic C200 HD digital console with two SSL MORSE Stage Boxes was just what they needed for the new all-digital mission of the network. The C200 HD will be used for live to Pro Tools production and post production for radio and television presentations of music performances. “We needed to replace our old analogue console,…

The Shure UHF-R currently reigns as the most widely rented and specified wireless microphone system. It’s been on the market for four years and has garnered legions of fans. Let’s look at some of the features and technical specifications that make the UHF-R system tick. Components Receiver options include the single-channel UR4S and the dual-channel UR4D. Most often seen, of course, is the dual-channel variant. Three transmitters are available, including the UR1 standard bodypack, UR1M micro bodypack and UR2 handheld.…

Christ’s Church of the Valley in San Dimas, CA, has been growing steadily in recent years, making a switch to digital audio mixing a virtual necessity. With multiple locations, six weekend services, and a broadcast component that includes live streaming and re-broadcast in New Zealand and Australia, the number of audio paths has increased far beyond the capabilities of conventional analog. To meet these needs, this evangelical contemporary church selected two Allen & Heath iLive consoles – an iLive-176 for…

So the big day (June 12, formerly February 17, 2009) came and went, and now we have the results of “the change”. For those of you living under a rock for the past 10 years, what has happened is that full-power analog TV broadcasts have ceased in most US markets. At the same time, most of the of spectrum between 698 and 806 MHz, formerly used by TV broadcasts and wireless microphones, now has new owners and is not populated…
