One of the topics that I’ve seen poorly understood, and even deliberately used to mislead people, is the issue of wireless microphone transmitter power and the effects said power has on system performance. Let’s start with the basics: all things being equal, more transmitter power = more range for the system, but not in a linear way. In broad terms, when discussing analog wireless systems, the receiver wants to see a signal from a transmitter that is at least about…

The new Zaxcom TRX900LT digital wireless transmitter, on display at the upcoming InfoComm show in Las Vegas, offers the ability to fully encrypt audio signals for secure audio transmission in corporate and legal settings where sensitive material may need to be protected from signal interception or theft. The TRX900LT bodypack unit combines wireless transmission, recording, and remote control receiving functions into a single low-cost wireless transmitter. To activate the encryption, a TRX900LT user simply enters an encryption code into the…

Nady Systems announced at Prolight + Sound 2010 the introduction of the new MGT-16, a UHF wireless system featuring 16 user selectable PLL frequencies. The MGT-16 features infrared download of the selected frequency on the receiver to the transmitter. The miniature, lightweight transmitter plugs directly into a guitar, bass or portable keyboard output jack with no cable or bodypack transmitter required; the stomp box size receiver can be placed anywhere—even on stage next to effects pedals. The MGT-16 features modern…

Will Allen Airshows present a series of breath-taking loops, hammerheads, spins, stalls, and other aerial maneuvers - all while Allen, known as the “Flying Tenor”, sings the national anthem of the United States and, occasionally, the anthem of Canadian live from the cockpit of his Decathlon (a two-seat fixed conventional gear light airplane). The aerobatic routine has been choreographed to harmonize with the cadence and crescendos of the anthems as Allen performs solo, with keyboard accompaniment emanating from terra firma.…

The Großer Musikvereinssaal, known to many as the Golden Hall, is home to Vienna’s Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra’s famed annual New Year’s Day Concert. With a worldwide television audience tuning in every New Year’s Day since 1959, the world-renowned architectural acoustics needed more; they needed a full sound system complete with AKG C 12 VRs, K 702s and WMS 400 wireless system. The Golden Hall is more than just a concert venue; it also hosts numerous lectures and public…

Summer weather finally came to the Midwest last weekend, just in time this year’s Lollapalooza at Grant Park in downtown Chicago. But temperatures in the 90s with high humidity did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the all-star line-up or the crowds that packed the park each night. At least two of the headline artists featured at Lollapalooza utilized Shure wireless microphone systems for their live performances. On the rainy opening night, Depeche Mode slogged through the mud circa Woodstock…
