Leon Russell recently set out on a tour with Elton John in support of their album, “The Union.” A full complement of Heil Sound microphones accompanied both Russell and his band; Jackie Wessel, bass, Chris Simmons, guitar, Brandon Holder, drums and Beau Charron, guitar and steel. Guitar cabinets are mic’d with PR 30s and the drum kit uses an assortment from the Heil Sound HDK drum microphone kit. All of the band members sing and PR 35s are used on…

As Deep Purple continue their tour through Germany and France, their long-serving FOH engineer Gert Sanner has taken the opportunity to transfer his show mix from his Soundcraft Vi6 digital console to the smaller footprint of the new Vi1. An early adopter of the Vi6, Sanner was keen to move his show files to the Vi1 and prove the process in a real-world environment. “The purpose was to create show files that would work on any Vi console,” he stated,…

Country Music Hall of Famer George Strait is back out on the road with Reba and Lee Ann Womack for their second sweep of the US this year. Dallas-based Onstage Systems is again providing concert sound reinforcement. For this leg of the tour, George Olson, Strait’s FOH engineer and lead system tech, chose to upgrade the in-the-round setup with the addition of 48 KUDO loudspeaker enclosures and 16 SB28 subs from L-Acoustics. The KUDO are divided into two pairs of…

Michael Bolton chose a breathtaking venue for the only Italian date on his world tour: the amphitheatre at the “Vittoriale degli Italiani” (Shrine of Italian Victories). The venue overlooks Lake Garda (the largest in Italy) and was Italian poet Gabriele d’Annunzio’s favourite place and his home until his death. The US singer/songwriter – who has sold 53 million records, won six American Music Awards, two Grammys and even has a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame – will end an…

Norah Jones concluded her recent North American tour at one of her favorite venues, the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. It was a fitting finale for the 48 Meyer Sound loudspeakers carried on the cross-country tour—more than 45 shows from Boston and New York City to San Diego. They completed their assignment roughly two miles from the factory where they were manufactured. At times it was a challenging but most of all satisfying odyssey for FOH engineer Brett Dicus and Spencer…

Riding high on this year’s Best New Artist Grammy and in support of 2008’s double-platinum The Foundation and its half-dozen number one singles, Atlanta-based Zac Brown Band (ZBB) continues to sell out larger venues. I caught up with them at the end of an East Coast run of the “Breaking Southern Ground” tour for a sold-out show at Charlotte’s 19,000-capacity Verizon Wireless shed, supported by Jim Brammer’s Special Event Services (SES). Those unfamiliar with Zac Brown are quickly disarmed by…

A good case could be made that the genesis of this summer’s James Taylor/Carole King tour reaches back almost 40 years, to the November, 1970 night the pair first performed together onstage at the Troubador in West Hollywood. Building upon the success of that event, a two-week, co-headlining encore at the legendary club ensued in 1971, this during the time that Taylor’s Fire and Rain resided at the top of the charts, and King’s Tapestry was earning acclaim. More recently,…

When Christina Aguilera postponed her 2010 Bionic Tour in the spring, engineer Jon Lemon was able to transition his gig—and the DiGiCo SD8 he was using for the tour’s promo leg—onto a Smashing Pumpkins’ run. Having worked extensively on an SD7 over the last few years with artists including Janet Jackson, Lemon wanted to use the few one-off gigs for Aguilera, including a VH1 “Storytellers” taping, to try out the SD7’s sibling. “I decided to go with the SD8 as…

After dazzling audiences on Broadway, and scoring a total of twenty prestigious Tony and Drama Desk Awards, including Best Sound Design, the theatrical adaptation of the popular movie, “Billy Elliot” is planned to hit the road on two simultaneous U.S. tours later this year. Based on the New York production, both touring productions will use customized DiGiCo SD7T’s at front of house and substage, and SD8’s to mix the band’s monitors, as specified by sound designer Paul Arditti. For the…

Sound Driver, a five-piece indie rock band, is midway through a very unusual world tour that is taking them top some of the world’s most unusual venues - including Mount Kilimanjaro - as a way of raising awareness for charity The Smile Train. The band has also played at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and future dates include The Great Wall Of China, Niagara Falls, Dubai’s Burj al Arab Hotel, the Willis (Sears) Tower in Chicago, and more, all as part…
