Topic Posted By Scott I’ve been told that a church in L.A., with 8.000 seating, hit something like 172 dB at the console. Is this possible? Someone else told me there’s no way to exceed 130 dB at the board. So I’m looking for the highest dB level anyone’s seen at the house console. Reply By Tom Danley 172 dB is loud, but is a level that can be produced in air. An array of six of the levitation transducers…

Good sound reproduction requires balance. Many auditoriums have at least two sound systems. The house system covers the audience, and the monitor system covers the stage. On stage, balance must be achieved between the various instruments to satisfy the musicians. The resulting stage level must be balanced with the house system level to satisfy the audience. Let’s use an analogy to clarify things. If I need gray paint, I can mix a little black in with a lot of white…

Harry Nyquist is famed for his work on feedback circuit analysis. His Nyquist plot makes visual simultaneously the following viewpoints of the signal: 1. The real part 2. The imaginary part 3. The magnitude 4. The phase angle between the real and imaginary parts 5. The polarity of the system 6. The causality or non-causality of the time behavior 7. The presence of resonant systems 8. Non-signal synchronization by …

EASERA SysTune is an audio measurement program from the Ahnert Feistel Media Group (AFMG), designed for real-time analysis of acoustic signals and aimed at those doing system alignment, tuning and live sound applications. SysTune is not a replacement or upgrade for the EASERA measurement program, but rather, it has its own unique features that allow it to perform measurement tasks not currently available in other measurement programs. More in-depth acoustical analysis of the measurements made with SysTune can be done…

Electret measurement microphones: an often-overlooked tool for the optimization of sound systems. While it’s possible to spend thousands of dollars on laboratory quality measurement microphones, electret microphones are all well under $1,000, and a couple are under $100, though the old chestnut applies: you get what you pay for. The better ones can also be used for a few sound reinforcement and recording applications where the advantages of directional polar response or contoured frequency response are not important, such as…
