Over the past several years, a technique most commonly called “aux fed subs” has been developed for reducing low-frequency “muddiness” from front-of-house loudspeaker systems. This technique has resulted in considerable benefits over a wide variety of sound reinforcement applications, but there is confusion as to what it encompasses and what it accomplishes. Let’s clarify the details and describe the set up of an aux fed subwoofer system. We’ll also be addressing some frequently asked questions on the topic. In a…

This is the fourth segment in our series on design principles for distributed systems. For additional reading, be sure to check out the first, second, and third articles within the series. Subwoofers can make the difference between good and great business music systems. Light background or foreground music might not require subwoofers; however, even in systems where the bass doesn’t need to be a dominant factor, having clean, full low frequencies can make a big difference in the customers’ enjoyment…

NPI Audio Video Solutions of Cleveland recently installed a new sound system headed by Electro-Voice EVH Series horn-loaded loudspeakers at Damascus Friends Church (DFC) in Damascus, Ohio “What I like about the EVH line in general is the pattern control,” states Jim Madden of NPI Audio Video. “It’s great for keeping the energy on the audience and off the stage, ceiling and walls.” That characteristic is precisely what was called for at DFC, which recently tore down its old sanctuary…

Suppose you bought the best subwoofer that money can buy. Its response is amazingly smooth and extends down to 20 Hz. You hook it to your power amplifier with automotive jumper cables, and warn the neighbors to make sure that small children and pets are indoors, because you are about to do some serious low-frequency listening. You fire the system up and insert the DVD test disc, the one with low-frequency sweeps that allow the smoothness of the system’s bass…
