At the recent Iceland Airwaves, Reykjavík-based Exton provided effective and powerful sound reinforcement for five festival venues using self-powered systems from Meyer Sound. Referred to by Rolling Stone magazine as “the hippest long weekend on the annual music festival calendar,” the five-day music showcase introduces cutting-edge acts from Iceland and across the globe, including this year’s CSS from Brazil; Junior Boys and Crystal Castles from Canada; U.K.-based Robots in Disguise; and White Denim and Boy Crisis from the U.S. As… View this story

A November tour of their homeland by Canada’s Sam Roberts Band played theatre-sized venues throughout the country, with the band’s FOH engineer Phil Hornung was faced with the prospect of using house PA systems in most venues. In order to maintain consistency of the sound, XTA distributor Sennheiser Canada supplied Hornung with a package of XTA processing options, comprising a C2 compressor, D2 dynamic EQ, E2 parametric EQ, G2 noise gate, GQ600 dual 30 band graphic EQ and DP324 SiDD… View this story

Dutch violinist and conductor André Rieu recently brought the world’s largest transportable set to stadiums across Australia, staging an unparalleled classical spectacle for anticipating audiences. The stunning production included a 125-meter-wide stage with a 600-square-meter ice skating rink, a gold coach pulled by six white horses, and a full-size reproduction of Vienna’s famed Schönbrunn Castle, replete with golden ballroom and gilded chandeliers. Montreal-based Solotech met Rieu’s demand for sonic excellence with a sound system headlined by Meyer Sound loudspeakers, based… View this story

Pardon our dust as we continue to put the finishing touches on the new ProSoundWeb. I’ve been calling this “version 3.0” but as some of our logos through the years show (below), maybe I’m a bit low on the version count. But over the years, this site has evolved in a significant way three different times. There were the startup/formation years, followed by a transition as the site moved to a much more open, flexible format, and now, what you… View this story

Al Galladoro, a master of the clarinet and saxophone, passed this week at the age of 95. Born in Chicago in 1913, the son of an immigrant, Galladoro picked up his father’s clarinet when he was 5, and by the time he was 14, Galladoro had embarked on an 9-decade career that took him first to New Orleans and then to New York City. Galladoro thrived in an era when music was performed live on stage or broadcast live into… View this story

A sound system featuring Electro-Voice components has brought a new lease of life to New Mount Baptist Church, which occupies a 100-year old building in Chicago’s South Side. AVI Systems, Inc. completed the system design and installation, balancing state-of-the-art software control with compact, high performance loudspeakers and amplifiers to create a budget-friendly solution. “The church asked me to design a concert sound system rather than a church system,” says Rick Muermann CTS of AVI Systems, Inc. “They have a full… View this story

My current assignment has found me behind a monitor console once again. It’s been a while since I stage-mixed on a regular basis, so I am enjoying the change of scenery. But this end of the snake presents a very different challenge from a FOH mix, or a system engineering position. Here, the fruits of my labors are not intended for the masses. They are tailored to specific individuals and each of his or her needs, wants, desires… and idiosyncrasies.… View this story
