Provided by Sweetwater. Q: I know a lot of guys (myself included) who like to run their studio monitors loud. I like it because it sounds good, you can “feel” it, and clients/musicians are impressed. However, I always hear people talking about protecting their hearing. Is there a correct volume for studio monitors? A: Most experts agree that 80-85dB is the best range for monitoring, for two reasons. First, this level allows you to listen for long periods of…

Provided by HOW To Church Sound Workshops. Many musicians with electric instruments often play too loud for the small churches they’re in, resulting in a mix that drives the congregation out of the sanctuary, and possibly to another, quieter church. (We know; we’ve been there, done that, both as musicians and sound mixers.) That being said, let me assure you that I feel your pain. Most small churches have acoustics designed in the early days of pipe organ and…

As with all sizes of modular line array enclosures there are several designs in the “mini” genre, which we define as those with 7-inch “woofers”. The simplest two-way systems have a single cone driver and a high-frequency driver, side by each. Some employ dual woofers, and those with a center high-frequency section that provides horizontal symmetry. Quasi-three-way solutions use dual woofers, but cross one over earlier, so the other is the single source of mid-range, eliminating cancellations. True three-way designs…

Heil Sound has introduced the PR 48 large diaphragm dynamic microphone, designed for kick drum use. The PR 48 features a 1.5-inch diameter element, and is mounted in a vulcanized double shock mount, which offers complete isolation within a rugged cast metal housing, which is designed with a slanted entrance to the 3-pin XLR so the cable assembly is easier to connect. A specially designed low pass filter sets the -3 dB hinge points at 30 Hz and 8kHz with…

VMB is pleased to announce the availability of Rainbow electro-acoustical prediction software for the company’s loudspeaker systems that provides horizontal as well as vertical modeling. Windows-based Rainbow allows simulation of complete systems, such as a main large format array complemented by a smaller delayed array and front-fills. Thus its library of loudspeaker systems includes not only the company’s self-powered line array modules with built-in inclinometer (LX-V8 and LX-F6 with accordion-folded ribbon HF driver), but also models from its PHASE or…

In response to requests by sound contractors and sound designers, Bartlett Microphones is offering their latest model TM-125C stage-floor microphone for area pickup of actors and dancers in drama or musicals. It includes a rugged 6-foot permanently attached cable which prevents connector damage if an actor steps on the cable. The supercardioid polar pattern of the TM-125C helps gain-before-feedback, and provides isolation from sounds behind the mic, such as a pit orchestra. Further, it picks up sound while rejecting mechanical…
