I enjoy questioning and testing that validity of these patterns. One of the beautiful aspects of live sound is that there is no true right or wrong way, but rather, certain approaches are more likely to result in preferable outcomes than others. With that in…

Pop music superstar Gloria Estefan swept into the U.K. in late July, headlining at the Summer Pops Music Festival at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, on a concert tour that is intended to be her last, also covering Latin and South America plus European festival dates. Clair Brothers Audio is supplying the tour with both a Midas XL8 live performance system and Klark Teknik DN9696 hard disc recorder. I’ve just fielded a call from someone in direct contact with the sound team regarding the alleged “sound system failure” last night on the Aerosmith/ZZ Top tour during its stop in Sturgis, South Dakota, where a series of events led to Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler injured and transported to a hospital after falling off the stage. The Associated Press wire report on the incident - picked up by news outlets around the country - begins: “Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler…

Nearly 600 drummers got their chance to be in the global spotlight earlier this month, as they raised funds for a leading UK multiple sclerosis charity, setting a new world record into the bargain. And helping to keep them all in time was a Yamaha M7CL console. Part of the National Rock and Pop festival, which also incorporated the Guitarfest and Drumfest trade shows, the “Stick It To MS” world record attempt was hosted by comedian and actor John ‘Jazz…

A few years ago, I was given tickets to a concert at the local arena. It was a co-headlining show where one act played, then the other, ending with both acts playing together. Being the supreme el cheapo, I eagerly accepted the tickets and acted like Romeo when informing my wife that I was taking her out. We arrived early and naturally I took stock of the audio setup. Each act had its own reinforcement system complete with separate FOH,…

Dessa Darling, emcee for Minnesota-based hip-hop group Doomtree, recently performed at the Guthrie Theater’s Dowling Studio in Minneapolis in celebration of the release of her new book, Spiral Bound, a collection of short fiction and poetry. Twin Cities-based production and rental company Windy Shores Sound provided a suitably high-end compact sound system for the event – the XA from Dynacord. Sound engineer Maury Jensen was impressed with the system’s performance: “I had heard of other engineers’ favorable experiences with Dynacord…
