As with all sizes of modular line array enclosures there are several designs in the “mini” genre, which we define as those with 7-inch “woofers”. The simplest two-way systems have a single cone driver and a high-frequency driver, side by each. Some employ dual woofers, and those with a center high-frequency section that provides horizontal symmetry. Quasi-three-way solutions use dual woofers, but cross one over earlier, so the other is the single source of mid-range, eliminating cancellations. True three-way designs…

Between Dallas and Forth Worth, next to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. the new Cowboys Stadium is three times larger than the NFL team’s previous home at Texas Stadium in nearby Irving. At $1.2 billion, it’s the league’s most expensive stadium to date, although that price tag is due to be eclipsed by the Jets-Giants new $1.6 billion stadium next year. The entire Statue of Liberty and its base would fit inside the stadium with the roof closed, as would…

What makes for an optimum church sound reinforcement system? On the surface, the obvious answer is “good sound quality.” Yet anyone possessing a grain of systems experience knows the correct answer is much more complicated. First, how does one define “good”? It has so many meanings, all of them potentially correct (or not!). Besides, the effectiveness of a system goes way beyond the realm of the often-subjective issue of sound quality. For example, is the system designed to be operator…

One of the most degrading effects to a cardioid microphone’s frequency response is what’s called “proximity effect”. Proximity effect has to do with distance that a microphone is “worked” - and it can be a blessing or a curse. When a sound source gets closer to the cardioid microphone the bass frequencies can be boosted up to as much as 18 dB in some cases! The closer the source the “boomier” the bass. Singers often use the proximity effect unconsciously,…

NLFX Professional recently installed an extensive new sound system headed by Electro-Voice components at Creekside Christian Fellowship, a church located southeast of Houston, Texas. With the help of EV’s IRIS-Net remote-control and supervision software, NLFX continues to monitor the performance of Creekside’s new system from its offices nearly 1,500 miles away in Bemidji, Minn. NLFX’s Travis Scharn described the project: “Creekside is really in the first of three stages of completion. At this point the main, 450-seat worship space acts…

Aviom, known to countless church sound personnel and musicians for its “more of me” personal monitor mixing controls, has put considerable work into how to move audio signals from one place to another. It’s led to the development of a digital snake system and audio networking system, which Kent Gibson discusses in the August, 2009 issue of Church Production magazine. How does this technology work? What are the advantages (and potential downsides) of transporting signal in the digital domain? And…

The ongoing Coldplay Viva La Vida concert tour has all band members utilizing Sensaphonics custom earphones and Sennheiser wireless systems. Further, all four band members upgraded from the classic ProPhonic 2X-S to the Sensaphonics 2MAX. “Most of the backline crew also have Sensaphonics IEMs,” says Monitor Engineer Chris Wood. “We have found the drivers to be very reliable. I can’t recall having a problem in the eight years we have used them.” A few wedges can still be seen on…
