In 1976, I was hired on the local crew to pitch and bail scaffolding and deck for my first stadium show at the historic Comiskey Park in Chicago. It was a July 8 truck tip and the day of the show was July 10. The temperature hovered around 100 degrees for the duration. We erected the monster in the left center field bleachers over the seats where Babe Ruth and Nellie Fox used to tear the hides off of well-greased…

Getting the call to mix monitors for Jessica Simpson earlier this year was my surprise birthday gift from FOH engineer Monty Lee Wilkes. Following a cross-country flight early the next morning, I was programming a Yamaha PM5D at Center Staging in Burbank for the debut performance of Jessica’s country music show at Country Thunder that weekend in Wisconsin. Jessica is as beautiful inside as out, a hard-working girl from Texas whose gift to audio is a dedication to her craft…

With Chicago’s Grant Park as the site of his victory rally, President-elect Barack Obama addressed a crowd of 250,000 on a warm November election night, with the global press corps depending upon wireless technology to help deliver their reports to millions worldwide. “As you’d expect during a historic moment like this, there were news organizations in attendance ranging from Al Jazeera to NBC, CNN, and C-SPAN,” notes broadcast engineer George Gorzelanczyk, the man given charge of coordinating wireless frequencies for…

Similar to American Idol, the hit U.S. show, Latin American Idol is a reality television show that enjoys a huge following. Just like its U.S. counterpart on many other levels, the program provides contestants with an opportunity to achieve superstardom, showcases celebrity guests, and uses the judge’s stand as a pulpit for lively and spirited discourse that sometimes extends into the audience as well. On the surface, one might easily construe that the only difference between the shows is that…

BarlowGirl’s Million Voices fall tour started in September, with the sisters/rock trio set to step out through mid-November in support of How Can We Be Silent, their third release since debuting on the Christian music scene in 2004. Beyond their music is their ministry, and to that end, the group has successfully blended both to the tune of nine Dove Awards nominations and several other industry accolades and honors. Onstage, the sisters — Alyssa, Rebecca, and Lauren Barlow — have…

The Federal Communications Commission voted Tuesday (November 4) to allow technology companies like Google, Microsoft, Dell, and Motorola to produce “white spaces” devices that will use the same radio frequency (RF) spectrum now being used by wireless microphone systems. Final text of the rules is not yet available, but the order is purported to greatly reduce the amount of clear spectrum available for use by professional audio and communications equipment. The Commission adopted certain important elements of Shure’s recent wireless…

In a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, NSCA Executive Director Chuck Wilson expressed concern regarding white spaces proceedings and new television bandwidth devices. As recently as August 9, the FCC conducted a test of white spaces devices before and during a Buffalo Bills-Washington Redskins game in Washington D.C. The results showed that the prototypes did not accurately sense wireless microphone signals, a function that would be required to prevent interference. “Our members are alarmed by preliminary public reports about…
