Britain’s Top of the Pops (TOTP) has been a BBC institution since 1964, broadcast weekly until 2006 and occasionally as one-off specials in the following years. The latest TOTP special, broadcast on BBC2 earlier in 2009, featured performances from Franz Ferdinand, Flo-Rida, Oasis, Take That, Tom Jones, James Morrison and more, live from BBC’s Studio 4, as part of this year’s Comic Relief charity fundraising special. Aside from the significance marked by convergence of these great artists, a TOTP revival…

The single rack-space Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 is part of the Saffire line of Firewire audio/MIDI interfaces that all feature innovative control, routing and, for the 40, latency-free direct monitoring. The Focusrite Saffire 40 stands out from other manufacturer’s units chiefly because of its superior analog front end, solid digital conversion system, unique feature set, and the unit’s seemingly endless universality. With its flexible analog and digital I/O capabilities it acts as the “nexus” of your DAW studio. This is…

I’ve been trying to get my ugly mitts on a Soundcraft Vi6 since I first saw one at AES two years ago. Tom Der had one to spare this summer and shipped it down to Asbury Park, NJ where Jason Dermer’s company, TSL, will be putting it through its paces. Since I do a lot of work with Jason, I got assigned the duty of figuring out how the brightly lit control surface works, getting it set up, mixing the…

Front of House Engineer Kyle Chirnside is utilizing a Midas PRO6 digital console on the current world tour by Fall Out Boy. “I’ve always been a Midas guy,” states Chirnside. “Whenever I had a choice, I would have my XL4. But then I had the chance to test drive the XL8.” That opportunity came with an invitation visit Metallica FOH Engineer Big Mick Hughes during preparations for Fall Out Boy’s autumn 2008 tour of the UK and Europe. “We were…
