In my perhaps too frequent visits to the Live Audio Board, I regularly read about weekend warriors who have just acquired their first DSP (digital signal processor) system controller and are seeking to understand how it’s auto RTA (real-time analyzer) function can help provide better performance out of their portable sound system. Invariably, the DSP unit is pressed into service for the first gig, a measurement microphone is attached, and some signal (usually pink noise) is run through the rig…

What’s the best way to equalize a sound system - by ear or by measurement? The short answer is both. Each method compliments the other. The ultimate qualification for sound quality is the ear. If it doesn’t sound right, nothing else matters. I once spent two-plus hours tuning a church sound system using the same methods I’ve employed on more than 100 systems, and the resulting sound was terrible. Rather than trying to convince my ears that the very good…

It includes a new, updated library of stored loudspeaker and amplifier settings. Having the settings included in the DriveRack eliminates the need for users to enter their own settings…

Dear Young Soundman, I finally got my first gig to tech a real system, using giant line arrays in a multi-level performance hall for a one-off performance of some ’70s band I’ve never heard of. I flew out and met the rest of the crew, and was told that the main person to make happy was the front-of-house operator. While this seems simple enough, he asked some basic questions like “How are you going to tune the room”, and so…

Moderator: (Dave Dermont) Good evening and welcome to our chat with Jamie Anderson of SIA Software Company. Jamie, could you give us some background about what you did before SIA, for those of us too lazy to read the bio? Jamie: I’ve got an EE (electrical engineering) degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) from Yale Department of Drama, and then spent six years at Meyer Sound as SIM and technical support manager. This was…
