Creating a sound system for a large aquatic center is not a simple task, with the combination of high walls, corrugated metal roofs, and an abundance of concrete, glass, and water making for an acoustical environment that is far from pretty, even before it’s packed with noisy crowds. Rising to the challenge was Chilliwack, BC, Canada-based Go Audio, the company behind the audio installations at both Cheam Leisure Centre and cross-town neighbor Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre. Both projects employed a…

Sinsinawa is a Native American term for “rattlesnake” or “home of the young eagle.” But in Wisconsin, it’s better known as the home of the Congregation of Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters. Since 1847, more than 3,200 women have ascended the “Hill of Grace” to take their vows as Sinsinawa Dominicans. Today the village is still home to their worldwide headquarters, including more than 600 current and retired sisters of the Order. In 1964 the campus, with its 1850s-vintage fort, was expanded…

The Berman Center for the Performing Arts, a newly built performance theater in the Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield, is outfitted with a flexible sound reinforcement system headed by Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers. The Berman Center, part of the Jewish Community Center that is a local nexus, is hosting a steady calendar of music, dance, performance, film festivals, and special events. The theater includes movable walls that close to form two adjacent ballrooms, or open to create a single large theater, with…

Lund Cathedral in Sweden, the country’s oldest and largest church and which dates back to 1080, has expanded its permanently installed Renkus-Heinz RHAON-equipped Iconyx digitally steerable system with the addition of a further IC16/8-R-II active array above its altar. The cathedral’s size—in normal use it seats 1,800 but can accommodate an extra 800 during major events that are frequently televised—reflects its historical status as the Seat of the Archbishop for the whole of northern Sweden and the other Nordic countries.…

Less than an hour south of downtown Phoenix lies the Casa Grande Ruins, one of America’s oldest prehistoric and cultural preserves. Built by the native peoples who farmed the Gila Valley in the early 13th century, the ruins include the remains of several ancient Hohokam structures, as well as elaborate irrigation systems. The largest of these structures is a four-story edifice whose adobe walls have withstood the harsh desert climate for more than 700 years. Designated a national monument in…

One of the giants in post-WWII American painting, Clyfford Still dropped out of the commercial art world in 1951. When he died in 1980, he willed entire collection to an American city willing to create a permanent home for it. More than three decades later, the Clyfford Still Museum opened its doors in downtown Denver. The 28,000-square-foot steel and concrete building houses more than 2,400 of Still’s works, as well as a collection of the artist’s journals, sketchbooks and archives.…

The Central Rotunda of the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. presents a serious acoustical challenge, made up almost entirely of hard, reflective surfaces while measuring 96 feet (29m) in diameter, and just over 180 feet (55 m) high at its peaked canopy. The space is visited by thousands of tourists each day, and is also used as a backdrop for public and ceremonial events. “It’s always been a problematic space,” says Tom Jones, engineer with Baltimore, MD-based Design…

The new 500-seat worship center at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in downtown Reno, NV, incorporates a sound system designed and installed by Reno-based JC Productions, headed by a pair of Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC Live digitally steered line arrays. The new facility is big, bright and airy, with an open feel and modern audio and video systems. As Scott Schmidt of Reno-based JC Productions explains, they were fortunate to have the room’s acoustics working for, rather than against them.…

St Joseph Parish has been a part of the Needham, MA community for more than 100 years. Beginning with a humble wooden church in 1894 and expanding its campus over the years to include a convent, elementary and middle schools, and a range of ministries. In 1966, having outgrown its existing sanctuary, the church completed construction of their current building. Though there have always been sonic challenges, the space has served them well for more than four decades. The room’s…
