In Howard Community College’s Smith Theater in Columbia, Maryland, a typical day might include everything from theater and film to lectures and meetings, with the occasional live concert thrown in as well. With inputs ranging from a single voice up to 56 inputs and outputs that might be mono, stereo or full surround sound, it was critical that this multifunctional space have a sound system with maximum flexibility and sonic clarity. The college chose an Allen & Heath iLive-112 digital…

The Fillmore Charlotte, a 20,000-square-foot venue at the North Carolina Music Factory’s entertainment complex in Charlotte, North Carolina’s Fourth Ward neighborhood, stays true to the tradition of the original Fillmore theaters. The venue, which opened this past June with Georgia acoustic rocker Corey Smith headlining, has the Fillmore’s trademark red velvet draperies, ornate chandeliers, custom lighting and vintage concert posters. The building, once a historic Charlotte manufacturing site, was reinvigorated by Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter, with Soundcraft…

The recent sixth-annual Univision “Premios Juventud” awards show utilized Sennheiser’s wireless technology to recognize the U.S. Hispanic youths’ top recording artists, movie stars, sports figures and pop culture icons. Over 80 wireless channels were used for the podium mics and most of the monitoring. Stylized performances from long-time favorites and up-and-coming celebrities punctuated the announcements, with reggaeton star Alexis y Fido performing with a pair of chrome-customized Sennheiser SKM 5200 wireless mics. “Whereas most awards shows feature performances that include…

It’s hardly rare to hear the words “major motion picture event” applied to a summer film. Visually stunning or not, whether it’s the latest Hollywood biopic, all-star comedy or action adventure, the phrase is attached to big budget summer flicks so permanently and casually that we hardly take notice. Front of House Engineer Kyle Chirnside is utilizing a Midas PRO6 digital console on the current world tour by Fall Out Boy. “I’ve always been a Midas guy,” states Chirnside. “Whenever I had a choice, I would have my XL4. But then I had the chance to test drive the XL8.” That opportunity came with an invitation visit Metallica FOH Engineer Big Mick Hughes during preparations for Fall Out Boy’s autumn 2008 tour of the UK and Europe. “We were…
