“It’s all Greek to me.” I hear that phrase often when speaking about the basic concepts of sound in churches. Being both a sound engineer and a musician, I’ve noticed that there is often a stark contrast between learning to play music and operating a sound system. When I learned to play my preferred instrument, I spent countless hours alone in my room making horrible racket that would someday become music. After that racket became music, I went to school…

The great “democratization” of audio which started the undoing of the traditional recording studio in the 1990s, has mushroomed into a thriving industry. On the level of national releases, it seems that only a very rare few are recorded in a proper studio from beginning to end. I’m sure that just about everyone involved with music has worked with an artist that has either done their entire recording project at home, or recorded at home for some “famous mixer dude”…

A recent poll here at ProSoundWeb asked, “The one thing I’d like to see the return of, or at least more of, in sound reinforcement is…” Response choices included tube electronics, rotary faders, loud/distorted audio, wired-only microphones, and wedges only (no IEM). Oh, and the winner: none of the above, which garnered almost 50 percent of the vote. Number two was tube electronics getting more than 20 percent, with number three being wired-only mics at about 15 percent. I was…

The current Britney Spears “Circus” tour brings an in-the-round extravaganza to arenas across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, with Montreal-based Solotech providing the tour’s sophisticated multimedia, lighting, and sound, including Meyer Sound line arrays, subwoofers and processing that provide consistent coverage across the arenas. “Today’s audiences are quite sophisticated, and expect album-quality sound at every show, regardless of the venue’s acoustics or other variables,” observes Front Of House Engineer Blake Suib, whose previous tour credits include Madonna, Prince, Guns and…

I have a keen interest in the history of live sound reinforcement, the gear that was used way back when, and the associated advancements of technology. I’m also very interested in new technology, even if the price tag of the cutting-edge stuff means the chances of me using it any time soon are a pipe dream. And, I also like to just hang out and talk shop with other sound guys. A recent event planned by some ProSoundWeb community members,…

The Marshall Electronics MXL professional microphone line has evolved with the introduction of the V89, a fully pro condenser microphone whose performance belies its $599 MSRP (U.S.). The V89 is proof positive; a perfect example of the way Marshall has “dialed in” quality control of their own overseas manufacturer to produce an instrument worthy to be called “professional.” The V89 starts with a custom body design made of brass that minimizes body resonance while the chromed tuned grill cavity helps…
