The fourth annual Readers Choice Awards—where you can vote on your favorite sound reinforcement products—has just launched on ProSoundWeb. (Go here) Readers Choice is unique for a number of reasons, chief among them (and as the name says), all voting is the exclusive domain of the readers of PSW. This article is provided by Audio Geek Zine. This week I bought the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter from the Apple Store to add an extra Firewire 800 port to my iMac. I’d been planning on getting one since they were announced along with the Retina Macbooks in the summer. At $29, is it just another overpriced white plastic Apple accessory? I wouldn’t say it’s overpriced. At this time it’s the cheapest thunderbolt accessory and the only way to…

It seemed just a short time ago that the line array market was headed in one direction: down. As in, virtually every new line array was smaller and lighter that its respective predecessor. Yet recent events have shown that the large-format genre (which we loosely identify as models with 12-inch and larger woofers) still has plenty of life left. As a matter of fact, within just the past year or so, at least five new large-format series have hit the…

The Altec Lansing 639A/B microphone made its debut in the early 1940s, and was originally sold by Western Electric (WECO) under the same model number. When the U.S. government forced the breakup of WECO in 1947, Altec spun off to continue manufacturing the WECO sound reinforcement and related products, and they continued to make/offer the 639 for many years afterward. The microphone earned the nickname of “birdcage” because of its size and body design. It’s an early unidirectional microphone, and…

One of the topics that I’ve seen poorly understood, and even deliberately used to mislead people, is the issue of wireless microphone transmitter power and the effects said power has on system performance. Let’s start with the basics: all things being equal, more transmitter power = more range for the system, but not in a linear way. In broad terms, when discussing analog wireless systems, the receiver wants to see a signal from a transmitter that is at least about…
