Sound companies handle “one-off” shows every day. It’s usually formulaic, and after a while, we do it by rote. But what happens when the client wants one-stop shopping? This is also known as “full production” or “turn key service,” and it’s quite a bit more involved than an average show. Generally months of planning and coordination are needed, as well as work with a number of subcontractors. It just can’t be done by the seat of the pants. Normally, when…

There are variations of three basic methods which seem to satisfy most requirements…that is, those requirements which don’t demand instant audio annihilation…for getting a signal out of an electronic musical instrument and its amplifier. Assuming that the sound to be picked-up is generated by a fundamental electronic instrument, say, an electrified guitar, one without built-in reverberation, wah-wah or the like. Then, there is no particular problem in coming directly off of the magnetic pick-up on the instrument into a mult-jack,…

A Studer Vista 8 Digital Live Production Console, now in use for “The Martha Stewart Show” on the Hallmark Network, provides Jorge Silva, the program’s Head Audio Engineer, with the tools that he needs to keep the show’s sound at the cutting edge. “When they designed the Vista 8, someone sat down and said, ‘How do we so this so that it makes sense to the operator that has to use the console under the time pressures of television production?’”,…

Before handling tour and production management for bands, I worked in various venues as a sound guy. I got really sick of crews coming in, looking at the stage plot and input list we had for them, and saying, “Oh, the agent sent you the wrong one!” So, in other words, they didn’t have five minutes in the last month to call up and make sure that we had the right one. I used to patch the stage before they…

I suspected trouble when I accepted responsibility for something I had no control over. There was a 50/50 chance of either being the hero or the whipping boy. I didn’t care for those odds, but I couldn’t change them. It all started when a friend of the family asked me to help make sure that the sound for his wedding didn’t ruin the ceremony. The catch was that I wasn’t handling the sound - his cousin, the part-time DJ, had…

I think the question could best be answered by the analogy: “What’s wrong with wetting your finger to measure wind velocity?” In truth, the VU meter does a great job of indicating the average level of a constant state signal. However the VU meter becomes unpredictable when attempting to measure the actual levels involved in a transient passage or in a complex waveform. Since music is composed of complex waveforms and transient passages a problem in accurate monitoring does exist.…
