In preparing for the 2010 summer tour season, Rat Sound needed to add some new equipment to its inventory. Starting the season doing five stages at the Coachella festival and with several arena tours booked, the company is poised for a big summer. “We’re seeing demand we haven’t seen in several years,” notes company president Dave Rat. “This will definitely be our strongest year ever.” One area of need was a new digital mixing console. “Knowing our client requirements, we…

When taking about great live sound, Harry Connick Jr. is often one of the first artists mentioned. With a large all-acoustic band that includes strings, brass, reeds, bass and drums in addition to his own acoustic grand piano, Connick routinely delivers an outstanding sonic experience, and requires great fidelity in the monitor system as well. Production manager Ted Jonas of Jonas Productions has been working with Connick since 1995, when he started as the artist’s monitor engineer. “I’m an old…

A major dividing line between ‘old school’ and modern touring is the use of digital audio. Insistence on an analog desk is a mark of particular kind of commitment, denoted by a forbidding “NO DIGITAL DESK” notation on the band’s rider. Many engineers for bands in these situations rely on Midas mixing consoles, including Doug Short. “Nothing but a Midas will do,” declares Doug Short, FOH engineer for Megadeth. “I’ve tried just about every digital console on the market, and…

German rental company Padco has supplied a Midas PRO6 for a spectacular European tour by Queen Esther Marrow and the Harlem Gospel Singers. The tour, which moved through Denmark, France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany, ended in Belgium at the end of January. Putting the system through its paces on this brilliantly vibrant show was German Front of House Engineer Werner Schmidl who, by his own admission, didn’t get to choose the audio equipment on this tour. “As someone who was…

A Midas PRO6 live audio system is being used for a new production of “Cats the Musical,” which has opened in Johannesburg. The PRO6 was specified by Mark Malherbe from Prosound, which has also provided the audio equipment for the show. “The previous production of Cats in South Africa in 2001 used an analog console, and I wanted to use this opportunity to not only go digital but to get the PRO6 into the country,” says Malherbe. Prosound’s involvement in…

A sound reinforcement system providing by Britannia Row and featuring dual Midas PRO6 digital mixing systems was utilized for the recent two week U.K. tour by Paolo Nutini. The PRO6s were used by Nutini’s Front Of House Engineer Graham ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson and Monitor Engineer Tom Howat, who was also mixing support band The Panics plus additional support acts appearing on the tour. Because the tour consisted mainly of smaller promotional gigs, the entire control system had to fit into a…
