Tammany Hall recently opened on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and immediately asserted itself as a formidable player in the local music scene. Its owners have created a number of successful clubs in New York City and across the country, most notably Crash Mansion, also on the LES. Tammany Hall delivers a wide selection of excellent beers and mixed drinks across three floors: an upstairs balcony, a prohibition-style basement lounge, and a main room with a generous stage. The owners gutted…

At the 2011 Prolight + Sound.Musikmesse 2011 in Frankfurt, Proel is introducing new HPX Series power amplifiers. The series includes models HPX 900, HPX1200, HPX2400, HPX2800, with output ranging from 900 watts to 2800 watts using power stages in Class AB and Class H and switching power supplies. All models are capable of providing their maximum rated power on a 2-ohm load. A selectable LPN (low-pass notch) filter allows for improved low-frequency response, providing more punch and greater dynamics while…

Danley Sound Labs, noted for producing high-quality professional loudspeakers and subwoofers, has just announced the introduction of power amplifier and digital signal processing products. The new Danley DSLA amplifier is available in four output power configurations, the DSLA 1.7k, 3.3k, 4.5k, and 6.5k. The model DSLA 6.5k delivers 6500-watts to a 4-ohm load in bridged mode or 2200-watts to two 4-ohm loads in dual-channel mode, and the other configurations follow a parallel name-to-output convention. DSLA amplifiers are capable of driving…

This article, clearing up misunderstood electro-physics of power amplification technology, was first published in the March/April 2000 issue of Live Sound International magazine. Q.} What does a power amp do, anyway? A.) In a nutshell, a power amp takes your audio signal and provides both voltage gain and current gain to drive loudspeakers. The voltage gain is necessary because line-level audio runs around a volt, peaking at maybe 8 to 12V, and loudspeakers need more voltage than that to produce…

Electric power companies have a good idea that has been applied to audio engineering. When they run power through miles of cable, they minimize resistive power loss by running the power as high voltage and low current. To do this, they use a step-up transformer at the power station and a step-down transformer at each customer’s location. This reduces power loss due to the I2R heating of the power cables. The same solution can be applied to audio communications in…

Here’s a handy quiz for checking your knowledge about audio power. Rather than submit you to the typical “right or wrong” questions with exact numerical answers, I’ve elected to provide a different means of self-evaluation. I can tell you up front that the answer to every question is “It depends!” But what’s really being asked is “WHAT does it depend on?” At first glance it may seem that the question is not even related to audio. Don’t be fooled. Principles…

It’s an answer to a sound company’s prayers: low-weight, cool-running power amplifiers with low current draw. Look for switching power supplies in power amps, and switch-mode power amplifiers. Compared to a standard amplifier power supply, the benefits of a switch-mode (switching) supply are lower size and weight. Compared to a standard analog power amplifier, a switching amp tends to run cooler and draw less current because it is so efficient. In addition, the amp can be smaller and lighter because…

Crown Audio will be offering an online seminar, “Creating Custom Panels In HiQnet System Architect” on December 16 at 11 am and 3 pm Eastern Standard Time, and on December 17 at 1 pm Eastern Standard Time. The seminar, presented by Crown director of application engineering Bradford Benn, will cover a case study of creating a control system for a small arena audio installation, using Harman HiQnet System Architect software. The concepts taught during the seminar apply to any size…
