The Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, a power plant located near New Brunswick, Canada, recently underwent a complete audio upgrade featuring Crown Audio CTs Series amplifiers. Point Lepreau, which began operating in 1983, has been redesigned to meet all current nuclear facility standards including its public address and life safety systems. “Since 9/11, much closer attention has been paid to life safety systems,” says Steve O’Rourke, audio division manager of Backman Vidcom, the Halifax, Nova Scotia integrator responsible for installing…

For years, power amplifiers with multiple channels (generally defined as more than two) were for either multiple headphones in studios or low-power-per-channel commercial applications. But are multichannel amps viable for mainstream professional sound reinforcement? You bet. Times have changed, and once again with regard to equipment, the change is for the better. Units with 3 to 6 channels have actually been around since the early 1980s. However, these either had a rather low power-per-channel rating or were fraught with design…

The Dale Horton Auditorium (DHA) at Pensacola (Florida) Christian College recently underwent a complete audio system upgrade, incorporating Crown Audio CTs Series amplifiers with PIP-BLU programmable input processor cards. The DHA, one of the largest performing arts venues in the Southeast, has a seating capacity of 3,500 and features an interior that blends angular and curved surfaces, fabric and wood and multi-level seating and houses a full working stage and orchestra pit. “The Dale Horton Auditorium is an absolute gem…

The Villages, a master-planned retirement community located in central Florida with a population of over 90,000 residents living on over 26,000 acres, offers a focus on golf – boasting 504 holes, on both executive and championship courses, including courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Nancy Lopez. Installing landscape sound for The Villages is a big job – the new downtown area, Brownwood, has 240 light poles, each will have Bose DS 40SE full-range, surface-mount loudspeakers mounted to them. All of…

In the classic sci-fi TV series Star Trek, Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise frequently implored his chief engineer, Mr. Scott (a.k.a. “Scotty”), “We need more power!” And Scotty always did his best to comply with the captain’s request, regardless of the complications of the situation. Sound reinforcement system designers and engineers have made similar demands of power amplifier manufacturers, and like Mr. Scott, they’ve come through, and in spectacular fashion. The modern power amplifier is light years…

Power amplifiers have been changing at a fairly rapid pace. Switching power supplies have reduced weight and offered added protection from line voltage variations. Class-D topology has cut the size of power supplies and heatsinks. Amplifiers are also shedding their conventional rack-mount chassis and taking up residence in loudspeaker cabinets. In light of these developments, it’s time to take a new look at the amplifier-loudspeaker relationship. We begin with the usual questions: How many watts will that loudspeaker handle, and…

Expectations in power amplifiers have come a long way over the years. We expect higher power, lighter weight, cleaner sound, less heat and increased reliability, all for less cost and with less weight per watt. Power amplifiers are almost a commodity today. Large power outputs from 1U and 2U high units are ubiquitous, cheap, and one could say that there is a surfeit of choices. BETHEMOTHS Last century we were at an archeological dig at the site of an old…

From humble beginnings in 1947, Crown Audio has grown to become one of the world’s largest manufacturers of power amplifiers. Crown’s history traces back to 1947 and an Elkhart, Indiana minister named Clarence C. Moore (1904-1979). Moore, a longtime radio enthusiast, had spent the early part of the ’40s in Quito, Ecuador working for HCJB, a non-profit Christian broadcasting and engineering group. Following his return to the United States, he felt the desire to supply Christian broadcasters like HCJB with…

Crown Audio is celebrating its 65th birthday in 2012, and while this is a notable achievement for a technology company, a key contributor to our sustained success comes from an organizational willingness to view past successes in the rear view mirror and look for new ways to innovate and improve. Yet there are also times when we look to an existing platform and explore new ways to improve it. Both of these courses were integrated with the development of the…
