New. U.S.-based company Bartlett Microphones has introduced the TM-125, a supercardioid condenser boundary stage-floor microphone designed for use on the theater stage to pick up actors in drama or musicals, capturing the footwork of dance groups, and picking up speech in boardrooms, conferences, pulpits, and altar tables. Designed by Bruce Bartlett and Steve Mills, who have 57 years of combined engineering experience at Shure and Crown International, the TM-125 utilizes miniature capsule technology that prevents phase cancellations due to sound… View this story

The new Sennheiser MO 2000 optical microphone offers a new type of transducer that processes acoustic signals on the basis of variations in light intensity, making it well suited for applications where other microphones are only partly (or not at all) effective. “By implementing the optical principle, both the microphone head and the electronics can be located far away from each other,” noted David McNutt, industry team manager-installed sound. “And to insure functionality in demanding environments the microphone head is… View this story

“It was a complex piece of engineering.”  That’s what Bill Moore of TECHNIARTS Engineering (Washington, D.C.) said about a custom loudspeaker clamp system, designed by Polar Focus, that was crucial in the recent installation of a Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC24 digitally steerable loudspeaker at the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in Washington. D.C. Because the building is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as part of the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site, no part of the… View this story

    Microphone Mysteries

Variable polar patterns can actually be good for several things. Before we go into them, we should probably briefly discuss what the main polar patterns are. The three “main” polar patterns are cardioid (or unidirectional), figure-eight (or bidirectional), and omnidirectional. In a nutshell a cardioid microphone picks up sound from the “front” only. A figure-eight microphone picks up sound from the front and rear of the microphone. An omnidirectional microphone picks up sound from all around. There are also a… View this story
