But I guess that would get you in trouble. You probably want to keep your job – it sounds pretty swinging by the ocean. I normally don’t have a problem with visiting DJs when I put them on stage to spin tunes. I set my channel EQ…

Let me clarify perspectives. On one side we have the perspective of believers, the “anything is possible crowd,” where the sky is not the limit, and whether a concept is repeatable or provable is not nearly as important as the fact that it was written, thought, or spoken. On the other side we have the perspective of skeptics, the self-proclaimed “investigators of verifiable proof ” residing in a world of science, which is based upon identifying dependable and repeatable ideas…

Every generation thinks the next wave of “kids” is largely comprised of know-nothing, spoiled brats who “have no idea how tough this job used to be, and by the way, their music is a bunch of noisy dreck.” That said, there are some emerging issues that really do keep me up at night worrying about the future.…

I’m regularly asked about my choices of favorite microphones. The answer is really pretty easy every time: my favorite ever made is the Shure SM57. You can point a ‘57 in the general direction of a sound and you’ll get a pretty decent representation of that sound that can be recorded and pounded to death later. Everything else in terms of microphones is pretty much open to negotiation. I do mostly unsigned artists, which often means that the “A List”…

Communications company drpgroup has purchased the first Midas PRO6 digital console to be sold into the British corporate events market. Established almost 30 years ago, drpgroup has grown into one of Europe’s largest and most experienced fully integrated communication and presentation organizations. A few nights ago, I attended the gig of a friend of mine who plays guitar. He’s a great player and a pretty cool guy. Sound-wise, there was a lot of stage wash that helped make the room sound muddy, and the house mix wasn’t doing much to help bring some presence and clarity to the whole picture. I took a peek at the console and was glad to see the main fader at unity, though the submix faders were…

The 2009 Prolight + Sound and Musikmesse held last week in Frankfurt reports “thoroughly successful” results, with 1,560 exhibitors at Musikmesse and 850 at Prolight+Sound, serving 111,000 trade visitors from 125 countries - an increase of about 1,300 over last year (109,777). “This year’s edition of Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound could not have been better, as shown by the large number of exhibitors, the high level of satisfaction with the results of business at the fair among both exhibitors…

To enhance the intelligibility of the paging systems within the 86-station Washington Metro rapid transit system in Washington, D.C., all paging announcement microphones have been upgraded to high-end, broadcast-quality Neumann TLM 103s. Washington Metro, or “Metro” for short, has one command and control center in downtown Washington D.C., and a second that is near completion in Hyattsville, Maryland. Within each center, four workstations permit the simultaneous pre-recording of separate pages or, more frequently, simultaneous real-time pages with different content sent…
