I’ve just fielded a call from someone in direct contact with the sound team regarding the alleged “sound system failure” last night on the Aerosmith/ZZ Top tour during its stop in Sturgis, South Dakota, where a series of events led to Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler injured and transported to a hospital after falling off the stage. The Associated Press wire report on the incident - picked up by news outlets around the country - begins: “Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler…

The tenth annual (2009) Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival saw hundreds of performers across five stages, with a wide range of artists including Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen, The Cure, The Killers and hip hop pioneers Public Enemy, among many others. In its quest to overhaul Audio Control Room 1 (ACR1)—the larger of its two main control rooms housed in its Masonic Temple location— and equip the facility with a full digital path, MTV Canada, a subsidiary of CTV, faced numerous technical and logistical considerations. One of the more common phone calls I’ve been receiving lately is from people looking for advice on which frequency bands to choose for their new wireless systems. Maybe it’s all of the tours going out, or maybe people are finally getting the message about the spectrum changes and they want to “do the right thing”. The Marshall Electronics MXL professional microphone line has evolved with the introduction of the V89, a fully pro condenser microphone whose performance belies its $599 MSRP (U.S.). The V89 is proof positive; a perfect example of the way Marshall has “dialed in” quality control of their own overseas manufacturer to produce an instrument worthy to be called “professional.” The V89 starts with a custom body design made of brass that minimizes body resonance while the chromed tuned grill cavity helps…
