Work was proceeding normally in the design and construction of the new 550-seat sanctuary for the Vineyard Church in Duluth, Minnesota, when something unexpected occurred. Dan Redman, president of Spinnaker Multimedia Solutions (Malvern, PA), audio-video-lighting (AVL) integrator for the project, explains: “Everything had been moving forward nicely when the builder hit bedrock in the foundation causing a delay in the project. About that time, our rep called to say Allen & Heath had announced the iLive-T at the NAMM show.…

My DAW desktop surface is more crowded than ever—-and I’m loving it! I just added the new Novation Nocturn Plug-in Controller to my small army of DAW accessories. As DAW plug-ins become more complex and intense, their GUIs (graphical user interface) have become more jam packed with more parameter controls than ever! And in order to keep their GUI’s screen size to a minimum, the controls and buttons keep getting smaller and smaller. Even though I get new glasses often,…

Allen & Heath has shipped the first batch of the new iLive-T digital mixing systems. The iLiveT was launched last month at Winter NAMM 2009, and the British manufacturer has been overwhelmed as distributors have placed orders months in advance to cope with demand. “The response to iLive-T has been unprecedented and production is now flat out to fulfill orders,” explains Managing Director Glenn Rogers. “In all my years in the pro audio industry I’ve rarely seen a reaction to…

Sennheiser has launched a roadie competition - the Sennheiser StageMeister Contest at www.sennheiser-stagemeister.com - which offers entrants the opportunity to accompany a touring band as a roadie. The competition is supported by Sennheiser subsidiaries and partners around the globe, who will provide practical training for the winners. The competition, launched at the 2009 Winter NAMM show, first searches for a roadie from the USA and Canada before focusing on entrants from Europe during the second round in April. The band…

Day 1 Dateline: ANAHEIM, CA, USA - So I was a day late in showing up for NAMM… which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because this is pretty much an annual event akin to the Bill Murray film “Groundhog Day” (where the same nonsense happens day after day until the lead role “gets it right”). Late or not, I arrived to find the same vendors of “custom” (in other words, off the rack) guitar pick guards… The same drum companies…

At the 2009 Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim. I traveled the show floor - front-to-back and end-to-end - to see as many new products and talk with as many people as possible. Optimism was the word of the event, particularly among manufacturers truly excited about their new products. (Check out our Photo Gallery from the show!) I saw a lot of creativity, and a lot of usefulness, and a lot of both. There wasn’t one single product that was a…

There are times when the optimistic fervor (and a certain downright silliness) that are staples of the annual Winter NAMM Show get a bit tiresome. Not this year - spending a few days immersed in the “what me worry?” vibe proved a welcome diversion in this uncertain economic time. It’s not that the more serious issues of the day weren’t on the minds of many of the people I had the opportunity to talk with over the course of the…
