Sony is expanding its line of portable professional audio recorders with the new PCM-M10, a palm-sized compact unit, designed to be a musician’s tool for composing music or recording practice sessions and performances, and even use as a personal music player. How do you review an icon? Often seen in photographs along with iconic people from dictators to heads of state to rock n’ roll stars, the Shure 55 is the most recognized microphone in the world. First produced in 1939, the original Model 55 Unidyne microphone was the first single-element unidirectional dynamic microphone. From its beginnings at that time being a cardioid pattern microphone, its smaller size made it a true classic that was affordable and accessible to all. Then…

A number of manufacturers have introduced new wireless microphone systems in the past two years – many of them in response to the changes in the RF spectrum brought about by the FCC. As a result, I thought it would be interesting to provide an in-depth look at a number of these recently introduced systems, beginning here with the AKG DMS 700 digital wireless system, which was announced at NAMM in January of this year. Professional caliber digital wireless systems…

Work was proceeding normally in the design and construction of the new 550-seat sanctuary for the Vineyard Church in Duluth, Minnesota, when something unexpected occurred. Dan Redman, president of Spinnaker Multimedia Solutions (Malvern, PA), audio-video-lighting (AVL) integrator for the project, explains: “Everything had been moving forward nicely when the builder hit bedrock in the foundation causing a delay in the project. About that time, our rep called to say Allen & Heath had announced the iLive-T at the NAMM show.…

My DAW desktop surface is more crowded than ever---and I’m loving it! I just added the new Novation Nocturn Plug-in Controller to my small army of DAW accessories. As DAW plug-ins become more complex and intense, their GUIs (graphical user interface) have become more jam packed with more parameter controls than ever! And in order to keep their GUI’s screen size to a minimum, the controls and buttons keep getting smaller and smaller. Even though I get new glasses often,…

Allen & Heath has shipped the first batch of the new iLive-T digital mixing systems. The iLiveT was launched last month at Winter NAMM 2009, and the British manufacturer has been overwhelmed as distributors have placed orders months in advance to cope with demand. “The response to iLive-T has been unprecedented and production is now flat out to fulfill orders,” explains Managing Director Glenn Rogers. “In all my years in the pro audio industry I’ve rarely seen a reaction to…
