I suspected trouble when I accepted responsibility for something I had no control over. There was a 50/50 chance of either being the hero or the whipping boy. I didn’t care for those odds, but I couldn’t change them. It all started when a friend of the family asked me to help make sure that the sound for his wedding didn’t ruin the ceremony. The catch was that I wasn’t handling the sound - his cousin, the part-time DJ, had…

Picture Miami/Fort Lauderdale in the ‘70s: small and quiet, lots of birds, flowers and trees. Lots of artists too. There were loads of clubs and hotels to gig at, and the whole area was an inexpensive place to live with a great climate. As a community of players, we shared ideas and band gigs, and had a great time musically and socially. Three natives of Fort Lauderdale had a trio called “Woodchuck” who played Hammond B3, guitar and drums. They…

A few years ago, while bouncing around from studio to studio mixing various projects, I noticed something with the various other people working in the other rooms of these facilities: some mix engineers just don’t listen anymore. I’m not talking about listening to the client, I’m talking about listening to the song. There was a point in my life where music had to fit a certain criteria for it to be “good”. The criteria were hardly anything artistic, other then…

Many professional audio manufacturers are now actively producing their own proprietary network connection and control systems, thus enabling users to create and control products within the audio chain. While not a particularly new concept (Crown, for example, started the trend in the 1990s with the IQ computer control system for its amplifiers), recent years have seen a plethora of new solutions. Therefore, to partner this article on interconnection options, here’s a brief overview on the control and distribution solutions currently…

In his previous article, Rob Stam discussed the first four “deadly sins” one can make as a technician, musician and/or worship leader. If you missed it, click here to catch up. Rob checks in here with the final three, with experience-based commentary and advice along the way. Yes, technical people and musicians can get along and work as true partners in worship excellence – while having fun at the same time! Deadly Sin #5: Not holding one’s tongue (or, how…

Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of being a musical performer and worship leader, as well as a church sound engineer and technician. This has provided unique perspective from both sides of the platform; what I’ve learned on one side has helped me do better on the other side, and vice versa. Through this process, I’ve noted several problems and solutions that apply to the technical side, the creative side, and both. I’ve refined these observations and…

When Robert Marsh, president of New York-based retailer I DJ NOW, got a rush request from the design producer of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” for a quality handheld wireless system for the show’s Long Island home renovation, Marsh knew right away that the answer was Shure. He recommended a Shure PG24/PG58 Wireless Handheld System for the karaoke stage to be installed in the family’s home. “I explained to the producer how our sales staff consistently receive positive responses from our…

It’s an unfortunate reality that not every public school student has the opportunity to experience music classes or participate in a band, orchestra, or chorus. Thankfully, nonprofit programs like The School Tour exist to help expose inner-city youth to the power of live musical performances. Shure Incorporated is proud to support The School Tour in its mission of promoting unity through music and helping young artists showcase their talents. “Our Company is dedicated to partnering with worthwhile initiatives like The…

While most university music education programs concentrate on the preparation of prospective teachers for traditional work in school orchestras, marching bands, and jazz bands, the University of Washington in Seattle has added cultural relevancy to the mix. Among the requirements of students in Dr. Patricia Campbell’s music education program is a residency for performing and teaching at the Yakima Nation Tribal School in the city of Toppenish, located on the Yakama reservation in south central Washington. “The Tribal School has…

For most humans, there is nothing easier than breathing, seeing, smelling and hearing. We do these things without thought, and even take them for granted. Our senses were given to us to help us exist in a physical universe. They are transducers that allow physical stimuli to be converted into a form recognized by the brain. We are bombarded with stimuli every waking moment, and our brains are continuously processing the information to help us function in our environment. Of…
