NBC’s Today Show explored climactic changes on our planet with a special news report titled the “Ends of the Earth”. The report, which was presented late last year, featured the show’s four anchors stationed in different parts of the world, with the NBC Network News Field Operations team charged with the responsibility of handling all the technical logistics that enabled hosts Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Meredith Vierra, and Al Roker to simultaneously contribute to the program. For the crew tasked…

The most notable thing about weekly services at Christ’s Church at Mason (Ohio) is that each service is in a distinctly different style – traditional, contemporary and blended. The church’s 1300-seat sanctuary was recently renovated with a new sound system to handle the contemporary and blended services while a smaller chapel was built to handle the traditional service. Longtime integrator Worship Resources was brought in to develop an appropriate audio design, with an Allen & Heath iLive-144 digital mixing system…

After extensive A/B testing, CAD Microphones were chosen by Production Manager Maceo Price to handle several key mic’ing functions on Lil’ Wayne’s 2009 I AM MUSIC tour. Lil’ Wayne’s dynamic stage presentation involves a “three dimensional” approach with each band member on an 8- by 8-foot moving deck with video panels and surrounds weaving around and between them, dramatic pyro effects and Wayne moving all over a 60 x 48 foot “rolling” stage below. Price, who notes that he “loves…

Sennheiser and Neumann microphones were utilized for a wide range of live music applications at the recent 81st Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Orchestra mixer Dan Wallin was in charge of all of the live and pre-recorded music. Working in Remote Recording’s “Silver Studio” backstage, Wallin selected Neumann TLM 193, TLM 170 and Sennheiser MKH 8040 wired mics to capture the orchestra. This year, the orchestra, conducted by music director Michael Giacchino, was moved from the…

Ever since my most recent steady house gig became not quite so steady, I’ve been banished to a 14-foot straight truck to do gigs that usually come at the last minute. In fact, last minute gigs have become the rule instead of the exception. I used to consider getting booked for a Saturday gig on the prior Tuesday as a tight timeframe. Lately, Saturday night bookings are arriving on Saturday afternoon. The gig I’m writing about here, however, was booked…

There are times, quite frankly, when that huge arena rig is simply too much. Times when the trucks and road crew are not required. Times when you just want to pack some gear into the trunk of the car and get the gig done. Forget the laminates and get back to basics. Thankfully there are solutions, and we’re here to cover those bases. Whether you need a complete solution with built-in amps, wireless mics and FX DSPs, or just a…

With the introduction of the SM27 and SM137, Shure has expanded the SM Series of microphones to provide performers and engineers more tools. The SM27 is a rugged and versatile large-diaphragm, side-address cardioid condenser microphone designed to pick up the nuances of vocals and instruments with clarity. This microphone has a one-inch ultra-thin Mylar diaphragm for superior transient response, exceptional low frequency reproduction, and a low self-noise (just 9.5 dB SPL) to reveal fine detail when recording or during live…

Orlando, FL-based Total Entertainment Productions utilized Lectrosonics wireless microphone and instrument systems for the recent “Word Out” Festival Battle Of The Bands, an Orlando-area festival featuring live performances by 15 bands. Total Entertainment Productions, headed by Ted Morgan, supplied the Lectrosonics gear for all performers as part of its role as the live sound reinforcement supplier for the event. Morgan also performed house mix duties throughout the festival. “To help expedite changeovers,” said Morgan, “the musicians simply carried their guitars…
