The device commonly referred to as a “speaker” is more correctly referred to as a loudspeaker system. It is comprised of some transducers, a crossover network, an enclosure, and a few additional parts. Loudspeaker system designers must be familiar with the complicated interactions of the components that form the system. An assemblage of good parts does not guarantee a good system. (Note: For the remainder of this article I will refer to a loudspeaker system as simply a “loudspeaker.”) If… View this story

    Chuck McGregor 11/22/11 01:26 PM,
“So how many watts can this loudspeaker take?” The technical answer is that it depends on the thermal and mechanical limits of the drivers and crossover components. The practical answer is that it depends on the program material played: its peak/average ratio or transient content and spectral (frequency) content. The REAL question is not what is the power handling, but what is the OPTIMUM size power amplifier to use on a loudspeaker? Rule of Thumb For a rule of thumb… View this story

Situated on 143 acres in Shreveport, Lousiana, the new worship center for Word of God Ministries has a fan-shaped interior with approximately 1500 padded theater-style seats. The 125-feet deep room is composed of a raised stage facing a slightly raked main floor of concrete transitioning into a carpeted area of sharply raked “stadium-style” seating toward the back of the house. The 30-feet high sidewalls are sheetrocked but the black-painted insulation on the ceiling is exposed, which helps to mitigate overall… View this story

The sound system in the chapel at a local retirement home had all of the typical problems - distortion, poor gain-before-feedback, and intermittent operation. This is a very basic system, so what could go wrong? Two wireless lapel microphones drive a small mixer/amplifier, which in turn drives three ceiling loudspeakers via high impedance distribution. There is also a hearing assistance system, which according to the staff has never worked properly. During a typical chapel service the vocalist holds the wireless… View this story

    Jeffrey Cox 06/10/11 01:15 PM,
It’s a good time to invest in a new loudspeaker system. The economy is stabilizing and clients who had pulled back on events are showing signs of life. Your inventory is tired and may be outdated. The new technologies are genuinely impressive. And banks aren’t as terrified as this time last year. Better yet, manufacturers are chomping at the bit to get you into a new system. They’ve had a bad year, too. You’re in the catbird seat (thank you,… View this story
