For the past two years, pro audio and broadcasting has been moving away from peak level normalization and towards new, loudness-based solutions. In April 2011, another important step was taken when ITU-R upgraded its BS.1770 standard to BS.1770-2. The first version of BS.1770 relied on ambiguous speech detection, which can have unexpected consequences trying to control the level of commercials or programs of certain genres. The improved 1770-2 recommendation incorporates a clever relative gate, making the measurement well-defined and practical…

We “Men of Audio,” as my friend Clifford Henricksen put it in one of his frequent moments of levity, fight either the good fight for good sound or high fidelity. But let’s just take a look at the words high fidelity, or hi-fi. Taken literally hi-fi large quantities of faithfulness to the original sound; in other words we’re talking truth, or purity. Accordingly, the next concern is how shall you judge fidelity, and how do you maximize it? Criteria for…

OK. The band is well rehearsed. They have good equipment, and it’s properly set. They sing in tune. The balance between instruments and voices is perfect. The execution of the material is flawless. The guitars are perfectly in tune with the keyboard. The Front of House Engineer (you) is doing a great job mixing and every nuance is in place. So why doesn’t it sound like concerts we go to? There are quite possibly several reasons for that, but a…

Provided by Sweetwater. Q: Not long ago I set out to start my own studio, and so far it’s been going well. Recently I was reading a list of essential tools for the studio and noticed it included the dB meter. I understand why these meters are useful for live engineers, but are they really that necessary for studio use? A: Our ears are finely tuned instruments, capable of perceiving an incredibly wide range of volume levels and frequencies.…

A good house sound reinforcement system starts with a controlled stage monitor system, and a controlled monitor system starts with managing the on-stage levels. Simply, excessive sound pressure levels (SPL) on stage can often lead to excessive levels from the house system. This leads to two suggestions. Monitor levels should be set after house levels, and monitor levels should be sufficiently low in order to not interfere with the house system. Let’s proceed with the assumption that the goal of…
