As with all sizes of modular line array enclosures there are several designs in the “mini” genre, which we define as those with 7-inch “woofers”. The simplest two-way systems have a single cone driver and a high-frequency driver, side by each. Some employ dual woofers, and those with a center high-frequency section that provides horizontal symmetry. Quasi-three-way solutions use dual woofers, but cross one over earlier, so the other is the single source of mid-range, eliminating cancellations. True three-way designs…

Unveiled at the 2010 Winter NAMM show, the new Spectr Audio LS636M is an excellent blend of independent chamber design and high-output drivers. It is outfitted two 6-inch woofers with 2-inch voice coils and a 3-inch compression driver mounted to a wide coverage waveguide. The high output and wide coverage of the LS636M means fewer elements are needed to accomplish the necessary SPL and coverage. The LS636M has three independent chambers for true three-way performance. The chambers are acoustically sealed,…

Following a 10-year dark streak and $10 million, two-year restoration project, the greater Los Angeles area has witnessed the rebirth of another iconic entertainment venue, the Fox Theater Pomona. First opened in 1931 as an art deco movie palace from Hollywood’s golden age, the 2,000-capacity auditorium once again came to life on May 21 with a rollicking concert by Gogol Bordello, who properly inaugurated the room’s new L-Acoustics KUDO rig. Working in tandem with L-Aconstics, Oxnard-based Rat Sound Systems designed…

Electro-Voice has announced the release of new LAPS V2.2A, the company’s line array modeling and design program. LAPS is an essential tool for sound system designers who use EV line array loudspeakers. Using LAPS, a designer can quickly enter an array design and assess its performance. LAPS can model a full sound system, including main arrays, secondary arrays such as delays and front-fills, and subwoofers. After the final system design is chosen, LAPS provides full rigging specifications. LAPS includes comprehensive…
