Leading European rental company SSE Audio Group has invested in a DiGiCo SD7 to add to its extensive stock of high-end sound equipment. Managing Director John Penn, explains the decision: “Since we invested in DiGiCo D5s in 2004, they have been consistently in demand and very reliable. The low cost of ownership, coupled with these factors, has made the consoles produce a great return on what we initially perceived as a high investment cost. “We have kept an eye on…

When planning the upgrade from analog to digital for its Studio 12 in Montreal, CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada’s national public broadcasters, found that a 48-channel Solid State Logic C200 HD digital console with two SSL MORSE Stage Boxes was just what they needed for the new all-digital mission of the network. The C200 HD will be used for live to Pro Tools production and post production for radio and television presentations of music performances. “We needed to replace our old analogue console,…

Picture Miami/Fort Lauderdale in the ‘70s: small and quiet, lots of birds, flowers and trees. Lots of artists too. There were loads of clubs and hotels to gig at, and the whole area was an inexpensive place to live with a great climate. As a community of players, we shared ideas and band gigs, and had a great time musically and socially. Three natives of Fort Lauderdale had a trio called “Woodchuck” who played Hammond B3, guitar and drums. They…

When Athens’ Pallas Theatre was built in 1926, it quickly became a popular cosmopolitan destination for Athenian socialites, replacing the royal horse stables that were representative of this oldest city in Europe. With its regular jazz music and other eclectic performances, the Pallas Theatre paved the way for an influx of cafes, restaurants, and other gathering places, transforming the city’s Voukourestiou Street district into a cultural hub. Many decades later, Athens received a much needed revitalization, and the Pallas Theatre…

Cloudy skies and occasional drizzle did little to dampen spirits at this year’s Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, as legions of music lovers descended on Rose Hall, a historic, 7,000-acre north coast plantation, to see and hear performers ranging from Lionel Richie and British sensation Estelle to the legendary O’Jays and Reggae superstar Maxi Priest. With nine acts scheduled for the first night and seven each thereafter over the course of the festival’s three days, production manager Robert Stewart reached…

Record Great-Sounding Drums Using Only Four Tracks
Ward Lionel Kremer

Here’s a simple, common-sense method to record a great-sounding drum kit on only four tracks. I’ve always been a follower of the less-is-more philosophy, and this kit technique goes all the way back to my analog 4-/8-/12-track days when track economy was a must. There have, of course, been volumes dedicated to recording “trap kits”, from only two microphones to two mics on each drum! I think the concept of a drum kit as a group of separate instruments is…
