The planning and construction of Northwood Baptist Church’s new worship center in North Charleston, South Carolina, took nearly four years – and the church couldn’t be happier. “It took a little longer than we had originally hoped, but the patience paid off,” admits worship pastor Michael Bell. “But by taking the time to get it right, we got way more than we ever thought we could have. Our new Allen & Heath iLive-T console is a perfect example.” Design-build integrator…

Viewers of the 2009 Tour de France saw hundreds of racers cover over 2,200 miles in July, each vying for the finish line on Paris’ Avenue des Champs-Elysées, and they also heard an amazing soundscape thanks to Audio-Technica AT835ST M-S stereo shotgun microphones mounted to the cameras on five motorcycles that cover the miles-long pack of racers. The AT835ST microphones were provided by the Societé Française de Production (SFP), a division of the Euro Media Group, which has been a…

Spain-based FOCUS, S.A. recently presented an in-depth seminar and workshop focusing on EAW products and technologies for freelance sound technicians. FOCUS serves as a rental company for many high-profile touring companies in the area, so it is very common for third party and freelance technicians to be setting up and operating FOCUS-supplied EAW units. The seminar was intended to prepare those individuals to properly handle EAW equipment and make educated decisions on the setup and configuration of such products, along…

Euphonix recently played host to back-to-back audio industry events celebrating the achievements of hi-end film studios in both Los Angeles and London. On June 25 in Los Angeles, Euphonix and Todd-AO threw a party at the legendary Todd-AO Hollywood film studios celebrating the grand re-opening of the facility’s two newly renovated Stage 1 and 2 dubbing theaters, each featuring a dual-operator Euphonix System 5 digital audio mixing console. DiGiCo has come out with a steady stream of digital consoles utilized in a wide range of sound reinforcement applications, including larger church sound reinforcement systems. The company’s most recent development, the SD8 digital console, has 60 stereo or mono channels available (the equivalent of 120 channels of DSP)—plenty for most churches—and certain key functions are available on all channels all the time, in contrast with some digital consoles that don’t offer consistent processing on all channels. How does it…

Summer is here, and a good many of us are out working those “mud and dust” shows, fairs and festivals. We get to clean amplifier filters on a daily basis, put wedges into garbage bags to keep them dry, mix with visqueen draped over the console (also to keep it dry). And, we’ll have a shop vacuum at front of house as well as the monitor “beach.” That said, the toughest aspect to deal with when doing shows in the…

In the late 1980’s Matt Knobel started out working in several in New York studios including Media Sound and Platinum Island learning the ropes, then continuing with jingles on hundreds of recording and mixing sessions from American Express to Yellow Pages at JSM Music in NYC. “It was a great experience. I got to work with some great engineers, world class musicians and to work in a lot of amazing studios,” says Knobel. “I then started working a lot with…

Sennheiser has teamed up with FOX Sports to reverse that trend with an immensely practical, hands-on, trial-by-fire introduction to real-world sports broadcasting for promising students of telecommunications. David Missall, Sennheiser Director of Market Development for the Eastern region, originated the program and selected its first student, junior Michael Stevens of Ball State University, to work with industry veteran Fred Aldous in the FOX Sports mix truck at the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race in Charlotte, North Carolina “I don’t see…

The newest wireless system offering from Lectrosonics, the D4, is the first one I’m reviewing that does not use the UHF spectrum. Instead, the D4 runs in the license-free ISM band between 902 and 928 MHz. Unlike the UHF band, this slice of spectrum is only 26 MHz wide (as opposed to over 230 MHz for UHF). The FCC considers the ISM band to be license free, but still puts restrictions in place on how much power transmitters can have…
