There are advantages to getting older. Years of learning something new at every gig add up to that thing we call experience. You remember how well the first Soundcraft console you ever used responded to your touch. You recall, despite its simple interface and lack of things to tweak, how great the reverb of a Lexicon PCM-60 sounded. Another advantage to getting older is that the gear you lusted after as a youngster becomes affordable. The downside of this can…

This time in Real World Gear we look at the big guns - large format line arrays, those with 12-inch and larger woofers. Line arrays are modular, multi-way enclosures arrayed in vertical columns, with their cabinet’s geometry optimized to provide full-frequency transducer coupling from one enclosure to the next along the height of the array. This is achieved at lower frequencies with cone transducers forming a column from one cabinet to the next, at frequencies where the distance between their…

Pete’s Place Audio has announced the official introduction of its latest tool, the Blast Pad, a unique filter designed to protect microphones used in high-SPL applications. “Considering how sensitive and expensive vintage tube and ribbon mics can be, it’s a wonder that many engineers don’t think twice about putting up a cheap pop filter in front of them,” says Pete’s Place Audio President Lisa Montessi. “The downtime and cost to re-ribbon a mic can be substantial, making the Blast Pad…

AT 2009 InfoComm in Orlando, Fulcrum Acoustic debuted the CX/DX family of loudspeakers, the first of the TQ Install Series. Eight different products, all based on coaxial designs, provide 90- x 45-degree or 60- x 45-degree horn patterns and 12-inch or 15-inch woofers. A newly designed coaxial transducer/horn assembly, along with TQ processing, alleviates the problems previously associated with coaxial approaches. For example, the CX1595 is a coaxial loudspeaker that packs the output capability of a non-coaxial 15 inch, horn-loaded-HF…

A short drive north of Houston, Devasco International in Tomball, Texas specializes in customized welding and metalworking solutions. With a large staff, a 62,000-square-foot warehouse, and plenty of industrial-grade machinery, it’s not among the quietest of environments. Recently, the company installed a variety of Community Professional loudspeakers to handle a variety of sound reinforcement and paging needs throughout the facility. The loudspeakers were specified by Devasco Controller/Treasurer David Scott, who also holds a degree as an acoustical engineer. Fourteen Community…

At the recent 2009 Prolight+Sound & Musikmisse in Frankfurt, Sound Projects introduced the SPX-65 self-powered hybrid loudspeaker outfitted with a horn with constant dispersion of 65 degrees horizontal by semi-curved 20 degrees vertical, enabling it to be used both as a traditional portable 12-inch box and as a small to medium sized line array column. The wide vertical dispersion pattern of the full-range SPX-65 improves the acoustic coupling at shorter distance, enabling several SPX-65s to be flown or stacked to…

Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, Pennsylvania, recently upgraded its sound reinforcement quality by adding Community Professional loudspeakers to the distributed sound system serving the track’s growing crowds, in a project by systems company Moyer Electronics located in nearby Pottsville, Pennsylvania. As with most raceways, the challenge of getting announcements across over the roar of dozens of unmuffled engines was an ever-present concern. “Dirt track racing is actually a fair bit louder than NASCAR, with the track noise averaging around 96…
