When I was a budding sound engineer with the U.S. Air Force Band during the 1990s, one of my mentors was a consultant in the Washington, D.C. area named George Weber. George was a somewhat eccentric guy and definitely a dyed-in-the-wool audiophile. He had done some modifications to the band’s K&H studio loudspeakers, and those things did sound amazingly good. George once invited me to his home and played some record albums on his super-high-end stereo system. The turntable alone…

Stage volume, stage volume, stage volume. I think if I have said it once, I have said it a million times. But about four months ago, while in a rehearsal, I had been preaching in-ears, in-ears, in-ears, and then BANG it hit me. Sometimes they do play better without the in-ears! I want to be able to do the best possible mix, but sometimes, as audio engineers we can stifle the creativeness and enthusiasm on stage by the constraints that…

The amounts of sustained noise people are subjected to in everyday life have reached unsafe levels, according to a new report authored by leading sound experts. Building in Sound (pdf), developed by Biamp Systems in collaboration with acoustics expert and TED speaker Julian Treasure, reports that everyday noise levels regularly exceed World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended levels. The study draws clear links between excessive noise and poor acoustics and ill-health, distraction and loss of productivity, even disruption to educational development.…

One of life’s more interesting mysteries is how sound ends up as an electrical signal in the brain. Some quality research on the subject has been performed over the last several years, and it’s a bit less of a mystery than before. The central issue is what’s called the “moment of truth” reaction, the actual point in where mechanical turns into electrical energy, much the same how those magnets and coils do the same within our microphones, our own moment…

Hearing Health Science, a privately-funded Ann Arbor, MI company developing the Soundbites hearing health supplement, has announced that it will be conducting field studies with musicians to measure and confirm the effectiveness of this patented, FDA-approved micronutrient in mint form. Developed by University of Michigan scientists, Soundbites is a new, biological approach to hearing conservation – a formulation of four powerful antioxidant micronutrients, formulated to act in different compartments of inner ear cells to eliminate oxidative stress (the most prevalent…

NAMM and H.E.A.R. are promoting hearing conservation by providing Mack’s Earplugs in bins around the NAMM 2012 trade show floor and lobby areas. H.E.A.R. continues working together with the NAMM organization, as they have for many years, to help promote the importance of hearing health issues. “We are noticing a real improvement in awareness through these efforts and I am very pleased to be able to contribute, in support of both the organizers and the attendees, for what we expect…

Listen Technologies has introduced a new ADA Compliance Assistive Listening Calculator in response to customer requests for assistance in calculating their requirements to meet the standard. The calculator formula is based on Table 219.3 Receivers for Assistive Listening Systems from Section: 706 Assistive Listening Systems of the Department of Justice Title III of the ADA. The table outlines the minimum number of receivers/ALDS required based on the capacity seating of assembly areas; and the minimum number or receivers/ALDs that are…
