Like me, I’m sure you’ve heard the statement made in the headline of this article from quite a few sound folks, some of them real “heavy hitters” in the business. While some of them may have “golden ears,” I think these folks may be missing some of the finer points of system equalization, or more appropriately, system “optimization,” and the shortcomings of human hearing. So let’s see if we can break this down and arrive at a reasonable conclusion. First,…

But about four months ago, while in a rehearsal, I had been preaching in-ears, in-ears, in-ears, and then BANG it hit me. Sometimes they do play better without the in-ears! I want to be able to do the best possible mix, but sometimes, as audio engineers we can stifle the creativeness and enthusiasm on stage by the constraints that…

03/17/11 06:08 PM,
Chances are you make at least part of your living with your ears. Stop and think about it. Could you perform your job as well…would your income level be the same…would your professional reputation be intact if you suffer severe hearing loss? Both musicians and the live sound technicians who work with them need to be able to hear things. Not just hear them well, but hear them better than the average person. This should make us stop and consider…

How fast do sound signals travel through the various parts of the sound system? Do sound signals travel faster in analog snake cables or fiber optic cables? Also, what about transmission through the air with wireless mics? And where do the true and relevant sources of time lag exist in a audio system? What I find really interesting is that sound signal travels at differing speeds depending on whether it’s in the form of electricity, or sound waves in air,…
