Britain’s Top of the Pops (TOTP) has been a BBC institution since 1964, broadcast weekly until 2006 and occasionally as one-off specials in the following years. The latest TOTP special, broadcast on BBC2 earlier in 2009, featured performances from Franz Ferdinand, Flo-Rida, Oasis, Take That, Tom Jones, James Morrison and more, live from BBC’s Studio 4, as part of this year’s Comic Relief charity fundraising special. Aside from the significance marked by convergence of these great artists, a TOTP revival…

Mackie describes the HD1531 as a “15” High-Definition Powered Loudspeaker System”. Yep, it’s got a 15” woofer, and it’s a three-way system, and it’s powered. Now what’s all this about being “High Definition”? I suppose I could try to explain it, but it might be easier if you just go here (pdf) and get the Mackie explanation. The ordinary every-day non-HD attributes of this powered loudspeaker include 900 watts of power with an 1800 watt peak. Power is divided 700/100/100…

At 2009 InfoComm, Astatic introduced the new Astatic 1600VP, a unique continuously-variable pattern condenser hanging microphone system with remote polar control and an anti-rotational positioning mount. Designed to hang from ceilings, the 1600VP is highly effective in the recording and sound reinforcement of choirs, instruments and ambient micing, in addition to government, institutional and business applications. A low-profile carbon fiber boom (MB-1) is available for microphone stand mounting. The remote variable polar pattern control uses a two-conductor shielded cable (maximum…

I have a keen interest in the history of live sound reinforcement, the gear that was used way back when, and the associated advancements of technology. I’m also very interested in new technology, even if the price tag of the cutting-edge stuff means the chances of me using it any time soon are a pipe dream. And, I also like to just hang out and talk shop with other sound guys. A recent event planned by some ProSoundWeb community members,…

Ironman Sound Industries provided a turnkey solution from its St. Louis headquarters for the staging, audio equipment and labor for a concert featuring local favorite the David Crowder Band and a supporting act at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Michigan. According to ISI event coordinator Nick Barnes the concert was in a field house/gym that wasn’t built for concerts, so “we didn’t know 100% what the rigging situation was going to be. Luckily, our (Martin Audio) W8LCs gave us…

During the The Killers’ recent sold-out performances at O2 Arena in London, the band’s long-time sound engineer James Gebhard made the decision to fly his favorite compact Martin Audio line arrays without the W8L Longbow modules that extend projection to the rear of huge audience areas, exactly the situation presented by the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena. Coverage to the entire venue including side hangs, front fills and delays, was made up of 20 Martin Audio W8LC compact line array hangs as…
