What type of direct (DI) box works best for bass guitar? The answer is easy: it depends. In fact, more than anything else, it depends on the type of bass that the DI is going to be used with. When it comes to signal flow, there are two types of bass guitars: passive and active. The first electric basses, i.e., the original Fender Precision, were passive, and in fact still are today. They employed magnetic pickups to generate the signal…

The trial resulting from the lawsuit filed by Andover-based Fishman Transducers, Inc. on January 17, 2007 against Stephen Paul d/b/a “Esteban,” Daystar Productions, and HSN Interactive, LLC, commenced yesterday in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The suite alleges unfair competition, trademark infringement, and false advertising in violation of the Federal Lanham Act. Guitarists are constantly seeking their own sound or unique voice. However, producers often resort to giving instructions like, “Give me a raunchy blues sound à la Stevie Ray Vaughan,” rather than “Give me something wholly original that I’ve never imagined before.” It’s not that producers are unimaginative or that they deliberately want to mimic another guitarist’s sound; it’s just that categorizing sounds saves a lot of time and gives you a point of departure. Often you’ll hear producers requesting that…

Newly designed for acoustic guitarists, the Bartlett Guitar Mic Pro B provides hi-fi sound while rejecting feedback. Selling for $179, this pro-quality miniature condenser mic attaches inside an acoustic guitar for sound reinforcement and recording. It is intended to convey the timbre of the instrument accurately to the audience. Provided by Sweetwater. Q: At the studio where I intern I’ve noticed something kind of interesting. When I get to use the studio occasional at night, I let the band setup however they want in the room because I figure they should be comfortable. However, I’ve noticed that the chief engineer is really picky where everyone is in the room when he’s tracking, especially the placement of amps and drums. Does the placement of the instruments in the studio…

There are advantages to getting older. Years of learning something new at every gig add up to that thing we call experience. You remember how well the first Soundcraft console you ever used responded to your touch. You recall, despite its simple interface and lack of things to tweak, how great the reverb of a Lexicon PCM-60 sounded. Another advantage to getting older is that the gear you lusted after as a youngster becomes affordable. The downside of this can…

You’re recording an electric guitar, or amplifying it through a P.A., and there it is: hum! This annoying sound is a common occurrence. Acoustic guitars fitted with pickups can have the same problem. Hum is an unwanted 60 Hz tone—50 Hz outside the U.S.—plus harmonics. If the harmonics are especially strong, the hum becomes an edgy buzz. Let’s take a look at what’s going on and how to fix it. First we need to review how an electric guitar works.…
