From the dawn of pop music until the mid-1990s, if you had put a recording contract in front of most hungry artists, they would probably have signed it without thinking twice. But artists have become too savvy to go gaga about getting a boilerplate offer from a record company, and, as a result, music biz hucksters have had to become more creative about getting an artist to sign a contract without looking closely at the fine print. These days, record…

The ongoing Coldplay Viva La Vida concert tour has all band members utilizing Sensaphonics custom earphones and Sennheiser wireless systems. Further, all four band members upgraded from the classic ProPhonic 2X-S to the Sensaphonics 2MAX. “Most of the backline crew also have Sensaphonics IEMs,” says Monitor Engineer Chris Wood. “We have found the drivers to be very reliable. I can’t recall having a problem in the eight years we have used them.” A few wedges can still be seen on…

CAD Professional Microphones and Astatic Commercial Audio Products are re-branding as CAD Audio to expand the company’s product offerings across several markets, optimize the efficiencies of its sales and distribution channels, and streamline its marketing, PR and promotional efforts. The company’s original roots can be traced back to the Astatic Corporation, established in 1931 in Conneaut, Ohio by two radio engineers dedicated to the development of a static-free or “Astatic” microphone. The company evolved into Astatic Commercial Audio products, which…

The 2009 No Doubt Summer Tour, which culminated in August with a show at the Neal S. Blaisdel Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, was supported by sound reinforcement courtesy of Sound Image of Escondido, California, which provided JBL VERTEC line arrays. The 2009 No Doubt Summer Tour reunited one of the most successful rock groups of the 1990s, whose 1995 release Tragic Kingdom has sold more than 16 million copies to date. In recent years, No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani…

Analog? Digital? Both? In professional audio, many choices exist, but there’s not enough time to make the wrong ones. We regularly hear claims floating about, often skewed by particular opinions and interests that tend to color underlying simple truths. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the noun “analog” as being something that is analogous (similar or related) to something else. For example, an analog can be a food product that represents another, such as inexpensive whitefish “krab” intended to replicate more expensive…

The Fillmore Charlotte, a 20,000-square-foot venue at the North Carolina Music Factory’s entertainment complex in Charlotte, North Carolina’s Fourth Ward neighborhood, stays true to the tradition of the original Fillmore theaters. The venue, which opened this past June with Georgia acoustic rocker Corey Smith headlining, has the Fillmore’s trademark red velvet draperies, ornate chandeliers, custom lighting and vintage concert posters. The building, once a historic Charlotte manufacturing site, was reinvigorated by Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter, with Soundcraft…

Question posed by chessparov How have the Fab Four recordings helped you to make better recordings? Are there any specific techniques you picked up? Reply by phat Well, I have yet to get a chance (or have the guts) to mix a record the way I really want to. I realize the sound of those early stereo recordings of theirs was not supposed to be that way. “Revolver” is still my touchstone, after “Loveless” by My Bloody Valentine and just…

There is some misinformation floating about regarding the benefits and detriments of line array and point source loudspeaker technology. The industry seems to be split down the middle with dogmatic “traditionalists” on one side, “new-fangled” line source users on the other, with seemingly fewer of us who just use whichever is most applicable and don’t worry about it. Neither technology needs defending, neither technology is inherently superior at all tasks, and to be honest, there isn’t that much difference at…
